Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Does Mei Ling Hwa (Brian's wife) discover the truth about Brian Jr.'s parentage during this episode?

Answer: Yes

Brian reads a lesson to his children each day at dinnertime, but tonight's particular lesson involves honesty. Fearing that Brian Jr., who is still pretending he is a Swedish orphan, will take the lesson to heart, Brian skips ahead to tomorrow's lesson.

However, Mei Ling Hwa notices and insists he read the proper lesson. Brian Jr. does become aware of the consequences of his dishonesty, and confesses the truth to Mei Ling Hwa the next day. Mei Ling Hwa is furious, and she confronts Brian about the affair, insisting on a divorce.
2. What favor does Karen blackmail Patrick into doing for her?

Answer: Sponsoring Freddy for a club membership

Karen is adamant that Freddy should hold his bachelor's party at the exclusive club to which Patrick belongs. In order to hold this party, Freddy must become a member. Her reasons for insisting so strongly are not obvious to me, but Patrick is clearly reluctant to sponsor Freddy's membership. Patrick is afraid that Freddy won't fit in, and that Patrick will look like a fool.

However, Karen makes it clear that Patrick's wife Ellen will 'find out' about Patrick's relationship with Carmelita if Freddy is not granted a membership. Patrick's hands are tied, so he takes Freddy to the club.
3. Why does Tripp give the go-ahead for the twins' exorbitant party budgets?

Answer: To give him a reason to delay their hefty inheritance

The twins' original birthday party budget was one million dollars. When the disagreement over Natalie Kimpton arose and the twins decided to have separate parties, Nick logically split the money in half. However, Jeremy and Juliet pitched a fit, claiming they couldn't throw a party for less than two million dollars. Nick is appalled by this figure, deeming it "financially pornographic." He goes to Letitia and Tripp to run the budgets by them. Letitia is dismissive, claiming that they're just young and having fun. Tripp appears to be as disgusted as Nick, but allows the twins to have the money.

When Nick presses him for a reason, Tripp replies that this financial irresponsibility will give him grounds for delaying the twins' trusts, which he believes Jeremy and Juliet are not adult enough to handle.
4. Which of the following is NOT a way the older three Darling children (Patrick, Karen, Brian) used their trusts?

Answer: Buying African diamond mines

Letitia's father set up a $25 million dollar trust for each of the five Darling children, to be inherited on their twenty-fifth birthdays. The twins have not yet received the trusts, since they're turning twenty-five in this episode, and Tripp is reluctant to let them have them.

He claims he wasn't worried with the eldest three children, as they all did something sensible with it. Patrick bought a summer home in Maine, and Brian traveled the world for three years. The most surprising Darling was Karen, who invested the money (she seems more of a diamond mine kind of girl to me).

After telling Nick how the other children used their inheritances, Tripp mentions that the twins just aren't like the other children - a statement made to raise doubt in the viewers' minds over the paternity of the twins.
5. Lisa buys a rather unusual painting to place above the Georges' fireplace. What is the subject matter of the painting?

Answer: Ants

Lisa is doing a little bit of decorating, and wants to put a painting over the fireplace in the George house to replace one that was sold. Nick tells her to buy whatever she wants, and Lisa comes back with a bright white canvas containing two large ants. Nick clearly dislikes the painting (as do I), and tells Lisa that she paid an awful lot of money for two ants (six thousand dollars an ant, apparently).

However, the Georges have the money for such a purchase, so Nick's real objection probably has more to do with the painting's content.

The two have a minor argument over the painting, culminating in Lisa's returning the painting and Nick's buying a set of replacement 'ant' paintings in apology.
6. Juliet decides to leave her party to make up with Jeremy, but her friends remind her that the party will fall apart and her guests will leave. What famous line does Juliet utter in response, as the elevator doors close?

Answer: "Let them eat cake."

Juliet's party was a themed ball reminiscent of pre-revolution French aristocracy, with expensive ball gowns and grandiose wigs. However, after her hopes for the evening are dashed by a catty friend and grief over her separation from Jeremy, Juliet goes in search of her brother. Undaunted by her friends' lack of support, she leaves with "Let them eat cake," a phrase often attributed to Marie Antoinette, though the historical accuracy of this attribution is widely disputed. "O ye, of little faith" is a phrase from the New Testament of the Bible, "All's well that ends well" is from the Shakespearean play of the same name, and "Et tu, Brute" are Julius Caesar's supposed last words.
7. When doubts arise about Natalie's pregnancy, Jeremy confronts her. Is she pregnant?

Answer: No

Natalie apparently bummed a tampon from one of Juliet's friends at a club, and Juliet finds out. She alerts Nick to the situation, and Nick fills in Jeremy. Nick suggests that Jeremy make Natalie take a pregnancy test, but Jeremy refuses, claiming her word is good enough.

At his birthday party, Jeremy is unable to enjoy the festivities, so he confronts Natalie (who is drinking something that appears alcoholic, I should mention). Natalie tearfully replies that she thought that she was, and that she was afraid to tell Jeremy when she found out otherwise. Jeremy immediately breaks things off, warning Natalie to stay away from him.
8. What song does Jeremy sing while stripped down to his underwear on the Brooklyn Bridge?

Answer: "All by Myself" by Eric Carmen and others

After breaking up with Natalie, Jeremy promptly gets very, very drunk. At some point, he takes off all his clothes (with the exception of his boxers) and climbs up onto the railing of the Brooklyn Bridge. He then breaks into "All by Myself" while struggling to keep his balance. Fortunately, the police come rapidly and pull Jeremy to safety. Eric Carmen wrote and performed the song in 1975, and it has since been covered by a variety of artists, including Celine Dion (1997), Hank Williams Jr. (1977), Jewel (1995), Frank Sinatra (1976) and Eddie Murphy (2004) in Shrek 2.
9. Which of the below members of the Darling family is the last to know that Brian Jr. was Brian's biological child?

Answer: Karen

Brian Jr. confesses the truth to Mei Ling Hwa near the beginning of this episode, causing the tension between her and Brian. Mei Ling Hwa firmly asks for a divorce, but Brian begs his wife for a second chance. She relents enough to tell him that she will think it over, if Brian and Brian Jr. leave the house for the time being.

Therefore, father and son move into the Darling house, and Brian presumably brings Tripp and Letitia up to speed on Brian Jr.'s identity. (He may have told them earlier, but they definitely know by breakfast the morning after.) At breakfast, Karen tells Brian Jr. that he is an incredibly lucky orphan for getting to share in the Darling wealth. An amused silence falls around the table (where Tripp, Letitia, Karen, Brian, and Brian Jr. are dining).

When Karen learns that the child is Brian's son, she hilariously says "Sorry" to the kid (because apparently to Karen, having Brian as a father is worse than being an orphan).
10. After his Brooklyn Bridge party fiasco, Jeremy makes an unprecedented request of Tripp. For what does he ask his father?

Answer: A job

Tripp is furious when he learns of Jeremy's behavior at his birthday party. He yells at Jeremy for his irresponsibility, and then delays his (and Juliet's) trust. Jeremy is understandably angry, but is also upset over the night's events. The next morning, Jeremy apologizes to his father, but makes it clear that he is not apologizing simply to get his trust back.

Instead, Jeremy asks for a job. Tripp is overcome with pride that Jeremy is finally growing up, and tells Jeremy so in a touching family moment.
