Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Rovers Return

Answer: Coronation Street

'Coronation Street' began its long run in 1960, and the soap opera has been a staple of British television ever since. It is set in the fictional Weatherfield, located in the Greater Manchester area of northern England. The pub is where people meet to socialise and chat over pints of beer. The show was created by Tony Warren, who died in 2016.
2. The Garrison

Answer: Peaky Blinders

'Peaky Blinders' is set in Birmingham soon after the end of the First World War and began showing in 2013. The story is based around the Shelby family, who are involved in various criminal activities. At the time of writing (2020) five series have been aired with plans for two more, taking the story to the beginning of World War II.

The Garrison is the pub frequented by the gang and which they bought during series two.
3. Cafe Rene

Answer: 'Allo 'Allo!

This sitcome is set during World War II in France while it was occupied by German forces. The 'hero' of the show is Rene Artois, played by Gorden Kaye, the owner of the cafe bearing his name. His life is complicated by having a wife, girlfriends (the waitresses who work for him), two English airmen who are being hidden, a resistance worker who needs his help all while trying to keep on the right side of the Germans who also use the cafe regularly.

The show ran from 1982 until 1992.
4. The Winchester Club

Answer: Minder

'Minder' starred George Cole as Arthur Daley, a 'wheeler-dealer' whose money-making schemes are usually on the wrong side of the law. His 'minder', or bodyguard, is Terry McCann, played by Dennis Waterman, who has to extricate Arthur from the various problems he creates for himself.

The Winchester Club is not the usual sort of public house, but a private members club frequented by Arthur and his associates, most of them also involved in petty crime. The show was billed as a comedy-drama and ran until 1994.
5. The Dog in the Pond

Answer: Hollyoaks

This soap opera was initially aimed at young adults and teenagers, with the majority of the cast being in that age bracket and storylines designed to reflect the concerns of that age group. It began in 1995 and is set in a fictional suburb of Chester, in Cheshire, although filming is mainly done in Liverpool.

The title sequence is clearly identifiable as Chester, though. 'The Dog in the Pond' is, as you'd expect, where a lot of the action takes place and was also the place where five young characters died in a dramatic fire in 2006.
6. The Skinners Arms

Answer: Steptoe and Son

You have to cast your mind back a bit for this one. The first four series of 'Steptoe and Son' ran from 1962 until 1965 with a further four televised in the early 1970s. The elderly Albert made sure Harold, his son, was kept at home by various underhand tricks.

The Skinners Arms was mentioned regularly, but the characters were not shown in the pub. The American version was called 'Sanford and Son' and other countries also adapted the story to their own areas.
7. Foley's Bar

Answer: Mrs Brown's Boys

Set in Dublin, 'Mrs Brown's Boys' began in 2011 with Brendan O'Carroll portraying Agnes Brown, the matriarch of the family. Filming is mainly in Glasgow, despite the setting. Foley's Bar is frequented by Agnes and her friend Winnie McGoogan. The humour is best described as 'broad' and the show is pretty much universally hated by television critics. Viewing figures indicate that it is loved by some, though.
8. The Feathers

Answer: The Royle Family

The action, or rather inaction, of 'The Royle Family' takes place almost exclusively in the family's living room where they sit on the sofa and chair in front of a television that is permanently on. The programme was created by Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne, who both appeared in the show as well. Caroline's premature death (from cancer) in 2016 brought an end to the series. Viewers never saw 'The Feathers' - the pub's existence was mentioned by characters about to go there or having just returned from it.
9. The Railway Arms

Answer: Life on Mars

The British version of 'Life on Mars' starred Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt and John Simm as Sam Tyler, the detective who finds himself transported back in time to the 1970s when he is hit by a car. The characters congregate in The Railway Arms which is run by Nelson (Tony Marshall).

In the subsequent series, 'Ashes to Ashes', it is revealed that the pub is a portal allowing the characters to leave the limbo in which they have been living since their real life deaths.
10. The Nag's Head

Answer: Only Fools and Horses

''Only Fools and Horses' is one of the most popular television comedies ever shown and The Nag's Head is where one of the most iconic scenes takes place. The action takes place in London where Del Boy (David Jason) and Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) Trotter eke out a living from various deals. With a strong supporting cast of memorable characters, the show ran from 1981 until 2003.
