Elizabeth: "I have been conspired against myself. By Catholics. I haven't found it necessary to slaughter them in thousands."

There was a marriage treaty that hadn't been signed yet, so Sir Francis Walsingham went to France. Catherine de Medici informed him that the conditions of the treaty could only come into force at the altar. The French Queen told Walsingham, "I look forward to the day I may call her daughter."

It was just three people: Catherine de Medici, Ambassador Fenelon and Sir Francis Walsingham. The meeting took place in France as Elizabeth nor Francis could negotiate directly to each other due to their duties.

Elizabeth was blindfolded and spun around. She heard Robert Dudley speaking and made for him but he moved to another window. Finally, Francis of Alencon got her and had her remove the blindfold. Since Alencon was about to leave for a little bit, Elizabeth told him until he returned her eyes would be blinded by tears.

Simier had visited the Queen, giving her some gifts from Alencon and produced the royal night cap. When he came to his rooms, he saw the bed curtains move and flung them open with his sword pointed at the bed. It was Alencon who told him: "Put that thing away, it reminds me of my mother."

She sent him a garter of hers, much to his annoyance, because he wanted to marry her if only to get more money. Elizabeth paid an unexpected call on Alencon and commented that he still had her garter.

At a Council meeting with the Queen, Ambassador Fenelon, Alencon and Simier everyone seemed happy at last. But then Leicester said that in exchange for what England was giving, France ought to give Calais. Not one person was thrilled with that proposal.

Burghley: "Your Grace?"
Elizabeth: "Convey the Earl of Leicester to The Tower."
After hearing of Robert's secret life away from court and his marriage to Lettice Knollys, the Queen ordered Leicester's arrest to the Tower. She then planted a huge kiss on Alencon and announced, "My Lords, I give you the next King of England", before collapsing in tears in Alencon's arms.

How Simier found out about the marriage of Robert and Lettice is not known. When Leicester had the gaul to ask for Calais, Simier let the Queen know of Leicester's marriage to her cousin.

The French marriage was off for good thanks to Leicester and soon he was freed from The Tower after Sussex spoke to the Queen. After a meeting in the palace, Alencon, Fenelon and Simier left for the Low Countries. Leicester then slowly appeared and as the Queen said she was tired, Leicester offered his arm but the Queen asked for Sussex's arm.
