Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did Arya Stark get back the sword she'd named Needle in season one?

Answer: Yes

In the season four premier, "Two Swords", Arya did get her sword back. The episode title referred to two Stark swords, Ice and Needle. The episode opened on the destruction of Ice, Ned Stark's massive family sword. Tywin Lannister had it melted down and made into two new Lannister swords. He gave one to Jaime and one to Joffrey. And, I am sure he felt he'd gained his final victory over the Stark family. He was wrong. Arya and The Hound came upon a group of men, one of which Arya recognized. Polliver (actor Andy Kellegher) had murdered one of Arya's friends before taking the rest of her party on to Harrenhal. Arya killed Polliver with Needle, but not before she reminded him of exactly who she was.

Also in the premier, Sansa received a beautiful necklace as a gift from Dontos Hollard. She'd saved his life earlier in the series when Joffrey had been bent on forcing him to drink to his death. He gave her his last item of value, his grandmother's necklace, to let her know he appreciated her act of kindness. Whether this was true or not remained unclear, as Littlefinger told Sansa he'd made the entire thing up to control her actions after the death of Joffrey. Cersei rejected Jaime's romantic overture, thankfully, and told him that he took too long to return to her. She seemed to have very little, if any, sympathy for what he had endured in his year away. Shortly thereafter, one of her creepy spies came to her to deliver the news of Shae and Tyrion's involvement.
2. Who died at the wedding of Joffrey and Margaery?

Answer: Joffrey

In episode two, "The Lion and the Rose", Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell were wed. It was not long into the reception that Joffrey started behaving like a petulant child. Never one to see anyone enjoy themselves, he began tormenting his Uncle Tyrion very quickly. Tyrion did his best to accommodate Joffrey, but at the conclusion of his humiliation was a refusal to kneel at Joffrey's feet. Not long afterward, Joffrey began to choke on the pie he was being fed by his wife. In a great performance by Jack Gleeson, Joffrey's death was intense, quick, and a joy to watch. Cersei and Jaime were by his side as he died from some type of probable poisoning. Cersei immediately condemned her brother as the killer and screamed for Tyrion to be taken away. Meanwhile, Dontos urged Sansa to leave the party with him so she would not be killed.

Before the death scene, Cersei accused Brienne of loving Jaime. Brienne seemed nervous, but did not confirm or deny that possibility. I think it's clear that Brienne loved Jaime, as the two had shared harrowing experiences and saved each other's lives. In the north, Bran had a vision when he touched the werewood tree. He saw many things, a dragon shadow over King's Landing maybe being the most terrifying. It was unclear at the time whether the dragon was from the past or future.
3. Bran and his group were captured in "Oathkeeper". At Craster's Keep, did Bran reveal his true identity?

Answer: Yes

Bran was forced to reveal that he was Brandon Stark of Winterfell in order to protect his friends. They'd been spying on the men at Craster's Keep, as both Summer and Ghost were imprisoned there. Bran refused to leave without the wolves. By revealing his true identity, I know he hoped to buy them all a little more time.

Also in this episode, Brienne named Jaime's gift to her, a sword made from the melted down Ice, Oathkeeper. Jaime sent her after Sansa Stark, and the sword was to help Brienne protect Sansa and return her to her aunt. What he did not know was that Sansa was already on her way to her aunt, via passage with Littlefinger. Littlefinger and Olenna Redwyne both took credit for the murder of King Joffrey in this episode. The episode concluded with the horrifying discovery that the White Walkers were using Craster's sons to create White Walker children.
4. In episode 5, "The First of His Name", Jon and the Night's Watch arrived at Craster's Keep. Who did NOT make it out of there alive?

Answer: Locke

Locke had joined the Night's Watch, but not for the greater good. He was still working for Roose Bolton, and so therefore Tywin Lannister. When the Watch arrived at the Keep, Locke snatched up Bran and ran off with him. Bran took control of Hodor's mind, and used the man to kill Locke. He then sent Hodor to free Jojen and Meera. As Bran watched his brother Jon fight, he may have been tempted to reunite with him briefly. Jojen urged him to make the right choice and allow Jon to continue onward, and for Bran to continue the search for the three eyed raven. Bran did not alert Jon to his presence. After the victory, they realized one former Knight had escaped the Keep. But, unfortunately for him, he ran into Ghost. Ghost was most likely freed by Bran's group as they went to free Summer before heading northward.

Also in this episode, Tommen was formally named as King. Cersei pretended to support Margaery's desire to become Queen, but most likely was just feeling her out to see if Joffrey's widow was still ambitious. Margaery played the scene beautifully, and Cersei was not able to be sure of her intentions. Brienne and Podrick continued on their journey to find Sansa, who had arrived at the Vale with Petyr. Tommen Baratheon was played by Dean-Charles Chapman.
5. Did Tyrion confess to the murder of his nephew, King Joffrey?

Answer: No

"I refuse to give my life for Joffrey's murder, and I know I will get no justice here." That was what Tyrion said to his father in a brilliant performance by Peter Dinklage, After the sickening and shameful testimony of the one woman he had loved, Shae, Tyrion had had enough. He confessed to the crime of being a dwarf, which he said he'd been on trial for all of his life. He then demanded a trial by combat. Jaime was pained at the turn of events, as he'd negotiated a save for his brother with Tywin just before the trial. He'd offered to give up the King's Guard and go back to Casterly Rock and father heirs to the House Lannister.

Also in this episode, "The Laws of Gods and Men", Theon's sister arrived to save him from Ramsay Snow, but Theon was too far gone to save. Stannis and Davos traveled to the Iron Bank of Braavos to try and get their allegiance against the false king, Tommen, and his grandfather Tywin Lannister. Daenerys began answering to her subjects in Meereen, but pondered her ability to keep Slaver's Bay free.
6. Who killed Sansa's aunt Lysa in "Mockingbird"?

Answer: Petyr (Littlefinger)

In season four it had been revealed that Lysa had been in love with Littlefinger for most of her life. She'd let no one stand in between them; not her father, her sister or her own husband, whom she'd poisoned for Petyr. That allowed the audience to know that she and Petyr were what set off everything in the entire series. I'd always assumed Cersei and Jaime had killed Lord Arryn. Lysa witnessed Petyr kissing Sansa and tried to throw Sansa through the moon door. Petyr stopped her, told her he'd only ever loved one woman, her sister. Then he tossed her wicked self through the door and down to her death.

In this episode, Tyrion found an ally in Oberyn Martell (actor Pedro Pascal), who agreed to fight The Mountain for him. I recognized actor Pedro Pascal from the ONE episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" he'd been in. That is because I am a "Buffy" junkie.
7. Oberyn Martell defeated The Mountain and saved the life of Tyrion Lannister in "The Mountain and the Viper".

Answer: False

Oberyn Martell fought very well, but in the end his need for revenge and his arrogance cost him. He had The Mountain down, could have easily finished him off with a spear through the neck or head. Instead, he kept urging The Mountain to confess to the rape and murder of his sister, and to name the person who set him on that task. The Mountain knocked him to the ground and then proceeded to pop his skull like a melon. Tywin announced the defeat of Tyrion's champion and sentenced him to death.

Also in this episode, Sansa Stark used a mixture of truth and lies to convince the tribunal consisting of Lord Yohn Royce, Lady Anya Waynwood, and Ser Vance Corbray that Petyr had not murdered her Aunt Lysa. She was very convincing. They believed her story. Theon, now Reek, was able to convince his father's men at Moat Cailin to surrender. Ramsay's effective control over Theon led his father Roose to rename him Ramsay Bolton forever forward. Ramsay was clearly honored at this gesture, and another wicked psychopath went to bed happy that night. The Hound finally got Arya to the Eyrie only to discover that Lysa had died three days prior. Upon hearing the news, Arya busted out laughing.
8. Who died during the Wildling attack on Castle Black?

Answer: Ygritte

She was killed with an arrow as she hesitated to use one on Jon. The majority of this episode, "The Watchers on the Wall", happened during the siege on Castle Black. As she lay dying in his arms, Ygritte said to Jon that they should have stayed in that cave where they made love the first time.

He told her that they'd go back there and, for the last time, she said "you know nothing Jon Snow".
9. Did Arya kill The Hound in the season finale, "The Children"?

Answer: No

Brienne fought him for the right to take Arya with her, and The Hound fell from a cliff during the battle. Arya found him, broken and bloody, and he asked her to end his life. She chose instead to leave him there suffering. The episode ended with her sailing toward Braavos.
10. Who helped Tyrion escape King's Landing in the season finale?

Answer: Jaime and Lord Varys

Jaime escorted his little brother to the door of his escape and told him to knock twice and Lord Varys would be waiting. That did happen, but not before Tyrion took a detour. He sneaked into his father's chambers and found the woman he loved in his father's bed.

He snapped and killed Shae. Then he apologized for doing it. Afterward, he took his father's crossbow and found him sitting in the privy. Tywin called Shae a whore and Tyrion warned him not to say it again. When Tywin did, Tyrion put a crossbow bolt into his chest. Shortly thereafter, he put one into his father's heart. Lord Varys boxed Tyrion up and had him loaded onto a ship, but when he heard the horns sounding, he knew Tyrion had killed someone of importance in the castle and boarded the ship as well.
