Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of season two, one of the most dashing and beloved re-occurring guest stars made his debut. His first actions lead to Ioalus being placed on trial for his life. What is the name of this rogue?

Answer: Autolycus

Autolycus was the self titled King of Thieves. He was rare in that he was an unabashed criminal and scoundrel, but was never seen as a villain. He was played by the charismatic Bruce Campbell both here and on "Xena". This also marked the first appearance of the aspiring lawyer and love interest of Ioalus, Dirce.
2. In "The Mother of all Monsters," Echidna teamed with Demetrius to plot revenge on Hercules for the murders of her children by Hercules. Which of these was not a monster she named as a child in the episode?

Answer: Cerberus

Although Cerberus was a child of Echinda's in myth, she never mentions the guard hound of hell here. Although the Hercules has killed one Hydra in "Hercules and the Amazon Women," there have actually been a number of different Hydras, including one Ioalus faced on his own and a third killed off camera.
3. The episode "The Other Side" revolved around the kidnapping of one god by another. Persephone was the kidnapped god, but who was her kidnapper?

Answer: Hades

This was a very accurate retelling of the classic myth (minus Hercules's involvement). Just like in the myth, her mother Demeter withholds spring from Earth until her daughter is returned and ultimately a compromise is reached where Persephone is shared between Hades and Demeter in joint custody each getting 6 months of the year.
4. In "Cast a Giant Shadow" Typhon, husband of Echidna, is introduced. Hera has imprisoned him in a rock in order to drive Echidna insanely angry. When Hercules frees him, approximately how many years has he been trapped for?

Answer: 100

The gentle giant Typhon of the show bears absolutely no resemblance to the one of myth. The myth tells of him as a monster with a lower body composed of tentacles and hundreds of fire breathing snake like hands. He led an uprising against the Olympian and was buried under Mount Etna.
5. "Highway to Hades" tells the classic tale of a king who will do anything to avoid death, even let an innocent man die in his place. Hades gives Hercules the mission of bringing back the evil king or else the poor dupe will be forced to take his place in Tartarus forever. What is the name of the wicked king?

Answer: Sisyphus

The other three are other kings who have appeared throughout the series but none have been inherently evil. This story is based on the legends of the real king Sisyphus. Sisyphus was considered and incredibly vile man whose crimes included incest, fratricide, and betrayal of the gods secrets. For his incredible hubris in life and his attempts to escape his judgment, he was assigned an incredibly tedious task in the afterlife.

He was forced to push a boulder up a hill, but he was always lose his grasp just before the top.
6. The episode "Once a Hero" revolves around a washed up hero and his quest back to respectability. What mythological hero was this?

Answer: Jason

Jason (of the Argonauts fame) has become a shell of himself since his wife was killed. Ironically it is on a quest to reclaim the Golden Fleece that he regains his former self and reemerges as a strong confidant and courageous man.
7. "Let the Games Begin" is the story of the first Olympic games. It had events like the dash, the javelin and archery. It also had what other symbol that is commonly associated with the modern games?

Answer: torch

The torch was originally a grill used by Falafel for food, but Salmoneus has a brainstorm. Instead of medals, the victors were to be crowned with a ring of laurel much like the first Olympic athletes.
8. "The Apple" was a loose adaptation of the myth of the Judgment of Paris, the event which ultimately culminated in the Trojan War. Here Ioalus is called upon to judge the beauty contest among the goddesses. Which of these was not a contestant?

Answer: Persephone

Ioalus chooses Aphrodite and is rewarded with an apple that has the power to make women fall in love with him. He uses it on the first women he sees and nearly destroys the marriage meant to unite two warring kingdoms in peace.
9. "The Wedding of Alcmene" seemed to be a bit of a reunion show as both re-occurring and one off guest stars popped in even if they had no reason . Which of these characters was not an invited guest of the wedding party?

Answer: Blue Priest

The Blue Priest was resurrected after his death in "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom". He is there on orders of Hera to ruin the wedding and kill all the guests. Mica and Heliiotrope were associates of Salmoneus who were there in his stead although he does pop up at the last moment just after the huge battle.

Other guest included the surviving Argonauts (Domesticles, Archivus and Phoebe), Dirce the lawyer princess, Hercules's half brother Iphicles and his wife Lea. Echidna and Typhon were unable to make it as Echidna was pregnant again. Deric's wife Lyta was also unable to make it for family reasons (actually due to her commitment as Xena).
10. In "The Power," a mortal named Deon learns he has the power to compel people to do whatever he asks of them. This power is due to his half godly parentage. What god/goddesses had a one night stand to produce him?

Answer: Aphrodite

Deon is torn between a desire to do good and his dreams of adventure and glory. Ultimately though, through a bond he develops with his cousin Hercules he makes the decision to use his power for the cause of good.
