Brett had come looking for Billy in Washington D.C. only to find he was positioning a battery near Rock Creek. Furthermore, he was transferred to the First U.S. Sharpshooters that had just been authorized by Congress.

Cuffey and a couple of other slaves had been forced to get horses ready for Justin, his man and Madeline to take with them back to Resolute. Justin then threw a lantern on the cotton barn's roof, causing it to catch on fire. During the chaos, Mrs. Main was injured and carried away to safety by Cuffey.
