Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What nickname does Hiroki use to refer to Ryou?

Answer: Ganmo-chan

Ryou's mother owns an oden shop, and Hiroki's favorite part of oden is ganmo (fried tofu). Because of that, he began calling Ryou "Ganmo-chan"; a nickname she hated. In "Catch This!" she asked for a cuter nickname, suggesting "Tsumire-chan." (Tsumire is a type of fish sausage also found in oden.) However, he never actually used that name.

Despite her reputation of having a "magic pitch", he never called her "Makyuu-chan".
2. What was the name of the local baseball team that Ryou pitched for at the beginning of the first episode?

Answer: Wildcats

She took the mound in relief for the Wildcats with two outs in the ninth inning and the bases loaded. She struck out the batter to preserve an 8-7 victory over the Dolphins.
3. According to Hiroki, when did he decide to carry Ryou home?

Answer: When he lost

Ryou had hurt her leg catching Hiroki's hit, so he picked her up and carried her home piggyback. She said he was going too far, which led to this classic exchange:
"I decided I would carry you home if I lost."
"When did you decide that?"
"The moment I lost."
Say what you will, that's one of the best pick-up lines I've ever heard. (Literally!)
4. What was Ryou's mother's name?

Answer: Shino

A few times during the series, you can hear the players from the local baseball team referring to her as "Shino-san". Keiko was the first name of Chairwoman Himuro (Izumi's mother). Tami was the disguise name used by Kanako to prevent her father from discovering that she was on the team.
5. What game was Seira playing when Coach Kido first met her?

Answer: Billiards

She was playing pool (apparently) by herself while her two friends watched. She then proceeded to use the billiard balls as weapons against some men who threatened her.
6. Nene's first in-show appearance is before Seira's.

Answer: True

Seira debuted in episode 4, "Welcome, Seira". Nene's official introduction came in episode 5, "Wave-Motion Swing". However, Nene also had a cameo in episode 3, "In My Father's Footsteps", when Ryou was playing tennis against Izumi. She remarked on how impressive both girls were.
7. Against what school did Kisaragi Girls' High play its first practice game?

Answer: Meiou Junior High

As a first test, the fledgling girls' team played against the very successful Meiou Junior High baseball team, eventually winning thanks to a last-minute appearance by Izumi. Meiou was also the last name of Sailor Pluto from the "Sailor Moon" anime; Tomoe, Tenou, and Kaiou were Sailors Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, respectively.
8. Of the nine girls, how many actually had backgrounds in organized baseball or softball prior to joining the team?

Answer: 5

Ryou was the ace relief pitcher of her local amateur baseball team. Koharu was a softball player who had excelled in a practice baseball game against a local high school, until she was discovered to be a girl and kicked off the team. Hikaru, Yuki, and Kanako were stars in junior high school softball. Of the others, Izumi was a tennis star and Mao was on the judo team. Seira had been a prospective Olympic athlete in track and field before quitting due to problems at home.

As far as we know, Youko had no experience in organized athletics before joining the team.
9. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Hikaru?

Answer: She was the first girl to be shown kissing in the series.

Hikaru kissed Seishirou in episode 25, "Field of Broken Dreams". However, Izumi had already kissed Hiroki in episode 24, appropriately titled "The Kiss". Hikaru was first shown batting right-handed in "The Girl Stratagem", then displayed her left-handed swing in "Shine, Princess Nine".

Her thick dialect, a product of her Osaka upbringing, is unmistakable in the original Japanese, though it was excluded from the North American dub. In the game against Rinkai, with the "girl stratagem" no longer working, she used a type of reverse psychology to distract the baserunner and tag him out.
10. Which character was shown wearing the wrong uniform number in the opening sequence?

Answer: Koharu

In the opening, Koharu can be clearly seen wearing number 7. However, the girls all wore uniform numbers corresponding to their positions (pitcher = 1, catcher = 2, etc.) Koharu, as a center fielder, wore number 8.
