Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Vampyrotheuthis Infernalis, otherwise known as a vampire squid, are very passive. Helen believes they are called "vampire" for what reason?

Answer: They're incredibly intelligent.

Helen: "Mutated Vampyrotheuthis Infernalis. Vampire squid. Incredibly shy, I've only ever encountered one once before, sixty odd years ago in French Polynesia."
Will: "Okay, so a shy vampire. There's a first."
Helen: "Actually the name is misleading. They're amazingly intelligent and very docile. It's believed that they're called vampire not because of a violent predilection, but more because of their superior intellect."
2. Where was the oil rig located that Helen and Will crashed in?

Answer: Gulf of Mexico

This was shown right after they crashed and there was a message at the bottom of the screen that said, "'Tahiti Field' oil reserve. Gulf of Mexico. 305 km south of New Orleans. Sonatech 'Red Dog II'. Gas/petroleum production platform. Current status: decommissioned."
3. Right after the crash, Will says, "What is it with you and flying, anyway?" Helen says, "Two crashes in 158 years? That's not bad." What does Will say next?

Answer: "They only invented flying 110 years ago."

Helen: "You alright?"
Will: "I don't know. My door kind of gave way when we, you know, stopped. What about you?"
Helen: "Well, you know, any landing you can swim away from..."
Will: "What is it with you and flying, anyway?"
Helen: "Two crashes in 158 years? That's not bad."
Will: "They only invented flying 110 years ago so..."
4. Regarding the vampire squid, Helen says, "These creatures are so passive, ___"

Answer: "they're often killed by other species very early in their life cycle."

Helen: "Cephalopod. Thankfully, a very passive one at that."
Will: "This one doesn't seem too pleased that we captured it."
Helen: "Oh, it's much safer with us, believe me. These creatures are so passive, they're often killed by other species very early in their life cycle."
Will: "Well, welcome to your new home...Squidly."
5. Will was dying to get out of the country, but Helen said no. What country was he determined to get to?

Answer: Iceland

Will: "Good, there's still time."
Helen: "For what?"
Will: "A redeye from New Orleans, connecting through Halifax, and landing in the lovely city of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland."
6. What does Will say to the squid after it attacks him (not that the squid could understand him even if it was close enough to hear)?

Answer: "I'm gonna fry you up...a little tartar sauce."

Helen: "It might have marked this as its territory."
Will: "Oh, that's wonderful news."
Helen: "I've never seen such aggressive behavior in this species. Come on. You might want to get out of the water."
Will: "Good idea... I'm gonna fry you up...a little tartar sauce."
7. What does Helen do to make the squid leave?

Answer: She electrocutes it.

She takes some electric cords from the chopper, which are connected to the battery and drops them in the water. Then after the squid swims away, she turns off the battery, which is unfortunately mostly dead now.
8. What word does Helen use several times to describe the squid?

Answer: Docile

Will: "Fine, then it's just a crazy giant squid."
Helen: "Honestly, Will. They are one of the most docile creatures in the entire ocean."
Will: "Okay, you got to stop using that word to describe it because it is not docile."
9. How often does Helen go on vacation?

Answer: Every seven years

Will: "So you never go on vacation, huh?"
Helen: "I travel all the time. You know that."
Will: "On missions or for research. I'm talking about, you know, flopping down on a beach. A good book, a never-ending supply of mojitos..."
Helen: "I own a villa in Italy, on Capri, near Naples. I go there every seven years."
10. What does Helen say is not too high a price to pay for what they do?

Answer: A bout of occasional loneliness

Will: "Yeah, but doesn't it make us all more productive if we have normal, healthy relationships?"
Helen: "You're not being serious, are you?"
Will: "What am I talking about? Nothing we do is normal."
Helen: "I don't think a bout of occasional loneliness is too high a price to pay for what we do. Maybe you do."
11. Why are the squid and the scorpion so well suited as enemies?

Answer: They are both very intelligent.

Will: "If the scorpion hates the squid so much, why doesn't it just jump in the water, and they can do battle?"
Helen: "It's a bottom dwelling arachnid amphibian. It can't swim. The squid can."
Will: "Ah. So it needs solid ground to settle the score."
Helen: "They're actually very well suited as enemies. The sea scorpion is also more intelligent than it looks. It's just that it's incredibly vicious."
12. What does Will say after the scorpion opens the door and tries to attack him?

Answer: "What is it about me that makes these things hate me so much?!"

This is actually one of the lines that they kept showing in the commercial for Sanctuary that makes you wonder when you'll actually get to see it in the episode and then it finally happens and you say, "Ohhhh, so that's what happened!" and you don't have to wonder anymore. (Or at least that's what I say.)
13. Will says, "So we're gonna use a torch on top of a fuel soaked chopper that has a sea scorpion trapped inside so the giant vampire squid will follow it down?" What does Helen say?

Answer: "Sounds like a plan."

Helen: "We cut the helicopter loose. Squid will follow it down."
Will: "How are we gonna do that?"
Helen: "The acetylene torch from my diving kit. It should be able to cut through those wires."
Will: "Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a second. So we're gonna use...a torch on top of a fuel soaked chopper that has a sea scorpion trapped inside so the giant vampire squid will follow it down?"
Helen: "Sounds like a plan."
14. What's the real reason Helen wanted Will to stay?

Answer: She wanted him to be there for Ashley's birthday.

After they blow the chopper, there's kind of a moment of awkward silence then Helen says, "Tuesday is Ashley's birthday. That's the real reason I wanted you to stay, I just...didn't know how to ask you." I'm gonna take a wild guess and say this is the reason for the title of the episode, but I could be wrong. :P
15. How do they finally get rescued?

Answer: We never see them get rescued.

Yep, we never see them get rescued. The last line of the episode is Will saying, "Seriously, how are we gonna get out of here?" then the camera zooms way out showing the rig and the ocean around it and that's it. Although they obviously got rescued eventually because they are not still there in the next episode, so we'll just add this to the pile of life's greatest mysteries.
