Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 5, teams needed to depart from Nova Scotia.

Answer: True

In the beginning of Leg 5, teams headed out from Halifax, Nova Scotia and flew to Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine off the coast of Quebec. Upon arrival, teams located their Chevy Colorado vehicles and their clues inside, instructing them to properly pack all the items provided to them for this leg of the race. Once they had their items and packing job approved, they could continue on to Dune-du-Sud.
2. How many teams took penalties to avoid completing the sandcastle Road Block in Leg 5?

Answer: None

Arriving at Plage de la Dune-du-Sud, teams located their Road Block task for this leg of the race. For this one, teams needed to decide who would be 'king of the castle'. The selected racer would need to recreate a sandcastle provided to them, but they would need to build it overtop of their partner who would be submerged in a wetsuit in the sand (up to their necks).

This task proved particularly difficult for those not selected since it required staying in frigid water for a lengthy period of time. Gino, Cynthia, Neil, Ope, Matt, Dujean, Brent, and Sabrina completed this task.
3. How many teams completed the kayak hockey Face-Off in Leg 5?

Answer: Five

After completing the Road Block, teams needed to drive to L'Etang-du-Nord to find the Monument aux Pêcheurs, the home of the race's very first Face-Off, which required that teams battle in head-to-head competitions to advance in the race. For this task, teams battled in games of kayak hockey, scoring two goals to get their next clue. Simi and Ope and Neil and Kristin did not complete the Face-Off, instead taking penalties for skipping the task.

As such, Nic and Sabrina were allowed to continue without penalty since they had no one to compete against.
4. Which team used the Double U-Turn in Leg 5?

Answer: Gino and Jesse

Heading out from the Face-Off, teams began their Detour task-- 'Ride It' or 'Pull It'. In 'Ride It', teams needed to find a stable, mount a horse, and complete an obstacle course in under eight minutes. In 'Pull It', teams had to work on a farm, rolling a bale of hay into a barn and milking a cow to fill two one litre jars. Following the Detour, teams visited L'Escalier de la Pointe aux Meules to confront the Double U-Turn. Gino and Jesse U-Turned Brent and Sean to try and force out their Express Pass; the boys subsequently U-Turned Nic and Sabrina. Both U-Turned teams headed back to complete 'Ride It', though the latter team arrived too late in the day to be able to participate and were, thus, given a penalty.
5. Which team was last to reach the Pit Stop at the end of the fifth leg (penalties aside)?

Answer: Nic and Sabrina

After the Detour and Double U-Turn, teams were told to head out to their next Pit Stop, Pointe Old-Harry at the far north end of the Magdalen Islands. Gino and Jesse were the first team to arrive and, with their win, they were rewarded a trip from Air Canada to any Canadian destination and a year's worth of free gas from Petro-Canada.

At the end of the leg, both Simi and Ope and Neil and Kristin were given four-hour penalties for skipping past the Face-Off. Fortunately for otherwise last team Nic and Sabrina, they were told to keep on racing into their sixth leg of the race.
6. In Leg 6, teams flew to Sudbury, a town in what province?

Answer: Ontario

Heading out as soon as they arrived on Grosse-Île, teams were told to head to the ferry terminal, hitch a ride to Charlottetown, P.E.I., then drive to the airport and fly to their next destination, the mining town of Sudbury, Ontario (via Toronto). Upon arriving, they needed to drive their provided Chevrolet Trax vehicles to Copper Cliff and the Vale Mining Company where, two teams at a time, they would need to descend one kilometre down into the earth and break open a large piece of ore to find a nickel pellet they could trade for their clue...a single nickel coin.

This led them to the Big Nickel landmark in the city.
7. Which team won the Fast Forward clue found in Sudbury in Leg 6?

Answer: Gino and Jesse

Arriving at the Big Nickel, all teams were granted an opportunity to race for the Fast Forward, though only Gino and Jesse attempted it (and won it), allowing them to skip all tasks and go directly to the sixth Pit Stop. For this task, the brothers headed to Science North to feed a turtle its lunch...before eating the same meal of mealworms, crickets, and other creepy crawlies.

When both teammates finished their dish, they could jet ahead of the competition and head to the Bell Park Gazebo.
8. Teams completing the Detour task in Sudbury in Leg 6 could either work on a crime scene or learn which of the following?

Answer: Synchronized swimming routine

Teams not heading into the Fast Forward headed to Laurentian University to complete a Detour task, either 'Synchronize' or 'Analyze'. In 'Synchronize, both team members had to join a synchronized swim team and properly perform their routine to get their clue.

In 'Analyze', teams joined crime scene investigators to analyze a specific plot of land. While the area provided was only a three foot square, teams needed to locate ten teeth or bone fragments within it, mark them with flags, and properly plot their findings on a graph to complete the task. Only four teams could do either task at any time, so some teams were turned away. Ultimately, Brent and Sean completed 'Synchronize' and Brian and Cynthia, Neil and Kristin, Nick and Matt, Nic and Sabrina, Simi and Ope, and Dujean and Leilani completed 'Analyze'.
9. During the Road Block task in Leg 6, teams needed to learn which skill to receive their next clue?

Answer: CPR

After the Detour, teams needed to visit the Sudbury Outpatients Centre at Health Sciences North to find their next Route Marker and their Road Block task. For this one, teams had to choose 'who had more heart', and that person would need to view an instructional video about CPR and perform it correctly on a state-of-the-art mannequin to receive their next clue. If they could get everything right from set-up to hand position to compression rate over their two minute session, they would be cleared. Matt, Cynthia, Sean, Simi, Kristin, Nic, and Leilani completed this task.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of the sixth leg of the race in Sudbury, Ontario?

Answer: Nic and Sabrina

After the Road Block, teams headed to the Vale Living with Lakes Research Center to find marked canoes. These needed to be paddled one kilometre across Ramsey Lake to Bell Park where teams could disembark and run on foot to their next Pit Stop at a nearby gazebo.

Here, Gino and Jesse snagged another first place due to their Fast Forward win; this time they won a trip for two courtesy of Air Canada to any Californian destination. They also won a year of free gas from Petro-Canada. At the end of the leg, Nic and Sabrina fell too far behind at the Detour and Road Block to catch up, so they ended up being eliminated in eighth place.
