Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who dies at the beginning of part one?

Answer: Chancellor Torbis

Torbis and High Priest Hepesh argue with King Peladon about whether or not the planet Peladon should join the Galactic Federation. A strange monster then kills Torbis. King Peladon is played by Patrick Troughton's son David, who also appears in the Second Doctor stories "The Enemy of the World" and "The War Games", as well as the Tenth Doctor story "Midnight".
2. How are the Doctor and Jo separated from the Tardis?

Answer: The Tardis falls off a cliff in a windstorm.

The Tardis ends up precariously perched on a cliff and falls after the Doctor and Jo exit. The Doctor assures Jo that the Tardis is indestructible, so they climb until Jo finds a secret entrance into the castle. The "Tardis is stuck in a locked room" device occurs in other stories, such as "The Aztecs" and "42", and she gets separated from the Doctor by falling from a height in "The Impossible Planet" as well.
3. When the Doctor and Jo are mistaken for Earth's delegates and taken to the throne room, why does the Doctor tell Peladon and Hepesh that Jo is a princess?

Answer: The only women who may enter the throne room must be royalty.

According to Hepesh, "Only men of rank and females of royal blood" can enter the throne room. The Doctor calls her Princess Josephine of Tardis so that they aren't recognized as imposters. Jo is wearing nice attire, as she was about to go on a date on Earth, and immediately rises to the task.
4. What is the real name of the delegate from Alpha Centauri?

Answer: We're never told

Alpha Centauri and Arcturus are called only by the system they come from. This may be a throwback to medieval times when some men of rank were referred to by their title and the place where they owned land rather than by their family names. King Peladon is even named after his planet.
5. Various characters enter the secret passageways by doing what?

Answer: Moving torches

They move torches a certain way and doors open in the walls. The Doctor meets Aggedor in these passageways and discovers that the sacred beast is not a spirit but a normal animal that Hepesh has trained.
6. Why do the Ice Warriors think that Jo has come to Peladon?

Answer: To marry the King

King Peladon's mother was from Earth. The Ice Warriors believe that Jo will marry Peladon so that the bond between the two planets will be strengthened. The King seems quite taken with Jo, but she isn't having it.
7. How does the Doctor subdue Aggedor, the so-called beast of Peladon?

Answer: He hypnotizes it while singing an alien lullaby.

To calm the monster, he puts a mirror on his screwdriver and spins it while singing a song in Venusian. He seems to like Venusian things, as he also excels in Venusian aikido. He almost hypnotizes himself when testing the mirror, and Jo momentarily goes under when he demonstrates it for her.
8. The Doctor enters trial by combat to absolve himself of sacrilege. What happens after he has won?

Answer: Arcturus tries to shoot him.

One of the Ice Warriors shoots Arcturus (who was trying to broker a deal with Hepesh over Peladon's resources) before he can kill the Doctor. In this serial, the Ice Warriors of Mars are not the villains that they are in other stories, such as "The Seeds of Death" and "Cold War".
9. Hepesh offers all the delegates a chance to disband the conference and leave Peladon.

Answer: True

Hepesh doesn't want his planet to give up its traditional ways. He would rather send away the delegates than keep them on Peladon or kill them, since those actions may make Peladon enemies of the Federation. In the end, Aggedor kills Hepesh. The implication is that Peladon will now join the Federation, but it's never said.
10. Do the delegates ever find out that the Doctor and Jo are imposters?

Answer: Yes

The Doctor and Jo manage to keep up the facade until just before they leave. At the end, a woman claiming to be Earth's delegate arrives. She and the other delegates go after the Doctor and Jo, but only see the Tardis dematerialize.
