Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This quiz show came to British television in 2003 and was first presented by Dermot Murnaghan. A team of five challengers pit their intelligence against a team of five intellectual quiz experts for a cash prize. Which game show is it?

Answer: Eggheads

There is no greater way to start a team quiz by the Scrambled Eggheads than have a question about the "Eggheads" quiz show!

An egghead can be described as a very intelligent person, genius, highbrow or mastermind. Set five of these types of people against a team of five amateur quizzers and you get the British quiz show "Eggheads". Each amateur plays against a chosen "Egghead" in a specific category. The player, either "Egghead" or challenger, who wins the most points out of three questions wins the round and goes on to play in the final. It goes to sudden death if there is no winner after this time.

3. How many questions did contestants originally need to get correct to win a million dollars in Australia's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?"?

Answer: Eleven

This show, which ran from 1999 to 2010, was hosted by the jovial Eddie McGuire for most of its history. Its original format of asking eleven questions, beginning with a prize of $1,000, was later changed to fifteen questions. In 2007 the maximum prize pool was raised to five million dollars for a short while, but this was very quickly dropped back to the original million not long after. Though many got close to the top mark, only two contestants ever managed to take home the top prize pool, both pocketing a million dollars in 2005.

It was hosted by Alex Trebek in the early 1970s and had a French version entitled "Genies en Herbe". What is the name of this Canadian stalwart?

Answer: Reach For The Top

"Reach For The Top" got its start in Vancouver in 1961 with the first national version happening in 1965 with teams from Vancouver, Regina, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and Toronto.

There have been international games between champions as well as a bilingual championship including the "Genies en Herbe" winners...and, in 1983, a team from Prince Edward Island made the nationals including yours truly.

5. The American game show "Jeopardy", produced by Merv Griffin, is one of, if not the most popular knowledge-based game shows in television history. It has been hosted since 1984 by the inimitable Alex Trebek, but who hosted the show when it was first televised in 1964?

Answer: Art Fleming

The idea for "Jeopardy" was conceived on an airplane flight by Merv Griffin's wife, Julann, when he was trying to come up with ideas for a new game show, after lamenting the fact that there had been no successful game shows since the quiz show scandals of the 1950s. She suggested a concept in which the contestant is supplied clues to a different category first and is then required to supply an answer to the question for that category. Merv liked the idea so much and was able to convince NBC on the idea, even without a pilot. All the other choices are well known former game show hosts.

6. Winners of this UK quiz show are always the contestants scoring the fewest points. Four teams, each consisting of two players, battle through three rounds losing one team at the end of each round. The surviving team then attempts to win the 'jackpot' in the final round. Which game show is this?

Answer: Pointless

Contestants are given questions that 100 members of the general public have previously been asked, with the aim of not only providing a correct answer but preferably an answer that has been given the fewest times by the public.

Scores are then awarded based on the number of times each answer was previously given during the poll, the lower the score the better. If nobody has previously given the answer offered by a player, no points are awarded and it's therefore pointless. 100 points are given for incorrect answers, and the team with the highest score by the close of each round is eliminated.

A cash prize of £1000 is given each day which is increased accordingly on each occasion it is not won. An additional £250 is also added for every pointless answer given.
