Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Everything Changes", the pilot episode of "Torchwood", Jack tells Gwen Cooper that 'something happened to me a while back'. To what is he referring?

Answer: His death and resurrection on Satellite Five.

Jack was referring to his death by Dalek on Satellite Five, and his subsequent resurrection, which signaled the start of his inability to stay dead. At that stage, Jack did not understand what had happened to him, or why he was unable to die. He told Gwen that he was waiting for the 'right kind of doctor' to be able to explain it to him.
2. At the end of "Cyberwoman", Jack tells Gwen something in confidence when she said that she'd thought he could die after all. What secret did he tell her in reply?

Answer: He'd thought the same just for a few seconds.

Whilst watching Ianto resume his usual duties in the Hub, Gwen said to Jack that she'd thought he could die after all. He replied by saying, "So did I. And you know what? For a second there, I felt so alive."
3. Despite a seemingly growing infatuation with Gwen, Jack showed a keen interest in the Torchwood receptionist, Ianto Jones. Even though they technically shared a kiss during the episode "Cyberwoman", which season one episode showed viewers a distinct change in their relationship?

Answer: "They Keep Killing Suzie"

At the end of "They Keep Killing Suzie", Ianto propositioned Jack with his stopwatch, leading to Jack stating he would send the rest of the team home early. This significant turning point suggested that Ianto had finally moved beyond his anger at Jack over the death of his girlfriend Lisa Hallet, and was ready to move forward into a relationship with the captain.
4. In the episode "Captain Jack Harkness", Jack was confronted by Toshiko about his life before Torchwood. Which aspect of his life did he confess to her?

Answer: He used to be a conman.

When Toshiko asked Jack who he used to be, he told her he was a conman. When she asked how he became a part of Torchwood, Jack replied with a less direct answer, saying that someone had saved his life and brought him back from death.
5. In the season 1 finale episode "End of Days", Gwen talked to Jack about the visions that each member of the team had. When she asked what Jack had seen, he claimed to have seen nothing. What vision did Jack admit would have tempted him to open the rift?

Answer: The right kind of doctor

Jack simply said "the right kind of doctor", more or less repeating his words from the first episode, "Everything Changes". As with the first time, he was referring to the Doctor, and his need to find him again. It was his round-about way of saying that he would only do something that he knew to be wrong if it was the Doctor telling him to do it, because he believed the Doctor would never order him to do something without having a good reason for it.
6. Jack's return to Torchwood at the start of season 2 was tempered by a number of factors, not the least because of his reunion with Time Agency colleague John Hart. However, Jack found himself faced with another dilemma that had him in an uncharacteristic state of nervousness. What was this dilemma?

Answer: Asking Ianto out on a genuine date.

Whilst searching for a supposedly radioactive cannister, Jack very nervously told Ianto that while he was away, he'd been thinking that perhaps they could go out for dinner and a movie. Ianto agreed, on the condition that it was anywhere but in an office, telling Jack that some fetishes should be kept to himself.
7. In the season 2 "Torchwood" episode "To The Last Man", Jack confesses something in a rather round-about way that prompts Ianto to initiate a fairly heated kiss. What did Jack say?

Answer: He told Ianto that he loved him.

When Ianto came to his office to talk about Tommy Brockless, Ianto asked Jack if he would return to his own time, given the opportunity. Jack answered that going home wouldn't change his feelings of loneliness, and that in traveling through time he had met and loved people that he otherwise would never have known.

He looked very deliberately at Ianto as he said this, resulting in Ianto leaning in to kiss Jack in response.
8. In "Adam", Jack received a nasty reminder of a past that he'd long tried to forget. What was the memory that he had tried so hard to bury?

Answer: Losing his little brother Gray during an alien invasion

Jack's memories of his little brother were triggered by the presence of the alien called Adam. He was reluctantly forced to recall the worst day of his childhood, when aliens invaded the Boeshane Peninsula. In the process of running for their lives, Jack accidentally let go of his little brother's hand, resulting in Gray being taken by the invaders.

This was a guilt from which Jack would never be able to escape.
9. In "Fragments", how many times did Alice Guppy and Emily Holroyd claim Jack had died since coming to their attention?

Answer: Fourteen

Whilst Jack was tied to a chair in the dungeons, the deadly duo of Torchwood Three claimed that he had died a total of fourteen times since coming to their attention, to which Jack replied "Feels like more than that".
10. In "Exit Wounds", Jack was confronted by a terrible realisation. What was it?

Answer: His little brother Gray hated him and wanted him dead.

Jack was finally reunited with his lost brother, Gray, only to discover that Gray hated him, and blamed him for everything that had been done to him by his alien captors. He buried Jack alive, and when they came face to face again (hours later for Gray, but nearly two thousand years later for Jack) Gray told Jack that he wanted him to be the one "alone and screaming in the dark", and that it was all Jack's fault. Jack tearfully agreed, taking the entire burden of responsibility for what had happened to his brother.
