"The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing" (NASCAR) has become a huge spectator sport throughout the country. It has been discovered that an estimated $3 billion is spent due to the purchase of NASCAR related products every year. Established in 1995, the state vegetable is the Sweet Potato.

In 2001, the state red berry came to be the Strawberry and the state blue berry was established as, you guessed it, the Blueberry. North Carolina even has a state historical boat (the Shad Boat), a state carnivorous plant (the Venus Flytrap) and even a state toast (The Tar Heel Toast).

Dating back to the year 5000 BC, Pork is one of the most consumed forms of meat in the world. In 2006, 52.5 million tons of pork was consumed by China alone. The United States only consumed an estimated nine million tons. Former U.S. Presidents James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson were both born in North Carolina.

However, both Polk and Johnson began their political careers in Tennessee and represented that state when they were elected President.

Woolworth's opened for business in 1878 and went out of business in 1997, due to the company changing their name to Venator in 1996. A battleship from World War II, the USS North Carolina was named after the state. The Coast Guard Air Station located in Elizabeth City has become one of the busiest air stations in the United States Coast Guard.

Howard Cosell, Donna Fargo, Ava Gardner, Kathryn Grayson, Andy Griffith, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ronnie Milsap and Randy Travis were all born in North Carolina. "The Andy Griffith Show" was set in the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina.

Although NASCAR is a hugely popular sport, it isn't without its share of hazards. NASCAR drivers Kenny Irwin, Tony Roper and Adam Petty all died in the year 2000 as a result from race car driving. Perhaps the most notable NASCAR casualty was Dale Earnhardt, who was killed in 2001 from injuries he sustained from racing in the 2001 "Daytona 500". Known to many as the "Furniture Capital of the World", High Point was the hometown of future season 3 "American Idol" Fantasia Barrino. Clay Aiken, the "American Idol" season 2 runner-up, was from Raleigh. Established as its state capital, Raleigh was home to the first state owned art museum in the U.S.

Orville Wright was born on August 19, 1871 in Dayton Ohio and died January 30, 1948. His older brother, Wilbur Wright, was born on April 16, 1867 in Millville, Indiana and passed away on May 30, 1912. Both brothers died and were buried in Dayton, Ohio.

In Fayetteville, the first ever mini golf course was built and opened for business. With words by William Gaston and music by Mrs. E.E. Randolph, "The Old North State" was adopted in 1927.

Two months later, this event had inspired similar actions in fifteen cities, throughout nine different states.

The boy's parents didn't know it was gold at first and as a result used the gold nugget for a doorstop. The hit films "The Color Purple", "Dirty Dancing", "The Green Mile" and "Patch Adams" were all filmed in North Carolina. Teen dramas "Dawson's Creek" and "One Tree Hill" also were filmed in this state.

Answer: Walter

Walter Raleigh was born in Devonshire, England in 1552 and died in 1618 in London. In 1800, the state's population was 478,103. There were 1,893,810 residents in the year 1900 and in 2000 8,049,313 people called North Carolina home. A population of 9,061,032 was reported in 2007, making a difference of 1,011,719 in just seven years.
