Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The members of "The Unit" are affiliated with which branch of the military?

Answer: U.S. Army

The Unit (as the group of soldiers is referred to throughout the show) has no other official name, but their members come from the United States Army Special Forces. Their missions are highly secretive, and even their wives and immediate family members do not know the specifics of their work. When asked, they claim to be Army clerks and logistics workers.
2. One of the executive producers of "The Unit" is an established playwright, the author of "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "American Buffalo." Who is he?

Answer: David Mamet

Mamet is not only an accomplished playwright, but also a successful screenwriter ("The Verdict," "The Untouchables" and "Wag The Dog"), director ("Homicide," "Heist," and "Spartan") and novelist ("The Village," "The Old Religion" and "Wilson"). A very talented fellow!
3. The field leader of the Unit is a character named Jonas Blane, played by which actor?

Answer: Dennis Haysbert

Haysbert received a Golden Globe nomination for his role as President David Palmer on television's "24." He is also known for his Allstate Insurance commercials ("Are you in good hands?"). You may also recognize his voice on The Military Channel's promotions ("The Military Channel-go behind the lines"). Haysbert will play Nelson Mandela in "Goodbye Bafana" (his co-star will be Joseph Fiennes).
4. At the show's inception, actor Scott Foley played the newest member of the Unit. What is his character's name?

Answer: Bob Brown

Foley's character seems a little uncertain about exactly what he's gotten into. Fortunately, Jonas Blane has taken Bob under his wing, and Bob is a quick study.
5. During season one, which of these characters were NOT married to each other on the show?

Answer: Tom & Beth Ryan

To my knowledge, there is no character named Beth on "The Unit." Tom Ryan didn't marry until the end of season one. His wife, Charlotte, is portrayed by actress Rebecca Pidgeon, the real-life wife of David Mamet. Throughout most of the season, Tom Ryan and Tiffy Gerhardt were having an affair.
6. One of the recurring themes on the show is that military personnel are underpaid. During season one, how do the wives of the Unit decide to earn extra money?

Answer: They go into real estate ventures

Molly has been in the real estate business part-time and convinces the other wives in the Unit to partner with her, buying properties at low prices and then re-selling them for a profit. The plan works fine until Molly falls for a con artist's scheme.

At the end of season one, it's still unclear how much her mistake will affect her relationship with Jonas or her friendship with the other women.
7. What acronym represented the brutal testing program that the members of the Unit endured as a means of preparing them to survive capture by the enemy?

Answer: SERE

SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) is based on a real-life program that special forces operatives must endure (source: www.cbs.com). The eighth episode of season one was about how the members of the Unit were tortured, threatened, and manipulated to test their mettle and dedication. The other acronyms are made-up.
8. Ron Cheals is a retired member of the Unit who appears in several episodes in season one. When we were first introduced to his character, with what problem was he struggling?

Answer: addiction to pain medication

The actor who plays Cheals, Michael O'Neill, is one of those performers known for solid supporting roles. He has appeared in numerous television programs including "Boston Public," "24," and "West Wing."
9. During season one, Kim's goal is to finish her college degree. Where does she intern?

Answer: a local radio station

Kim earns the opportunity to intern at a radio station when she gets the contentious owner of a local strip club to pay his long-overdue bill-and to renew his contract for additional radio spots!
10. "The Unit" is based on which book?

Answer: Eric Haney's "Inside Delta Force: The Story of America's Elite Counterterrorist Unit"

Eric Haney, retired Command Sergeant Major, is one of the executive producers of the show. He knows his stuff; after all, he was one of the founding members of the Army's Delta Force. Look closely-according to one fan website, you can sometimes see Haney's name or picture in various scenes of the show (www.theunit-hq.net).
