 Summer (played by Rachel Bilson) and Marissa (Mischa Barton) are sitting in one of the 'lounges' at school, discussing Marissa's boy problems. Marissa was still in love with Ryan when he left and now that he's back, he's assuming they'll pick up where they left off. Marissa hasn't yet told him that she's moved on to DJ, though that whole affair is being kept quiet.

 Last year's kick off carnival saw Ryan freaking out on top of the ferris wheel (and also kissing Marissa) and Anna developing feelings for Seth while helping him to make Summer jealous. This year the carnival was a little different, with Seth watching Summer ride off with Zach, right after she tells him what's on her mind.

 Each character says this phrase differently. Seth's voice is filled with anxiety and possibly dread with having to confront Summer (who is known to have rage black-outs) so soon. Ryan doesn't really have any reason for being so shocked because he had a legitimate excuse for leaving. Maybe he was just anticipating seeing Marissa. She is shocked to see Ryan back in school, delighted since she was in love with him when he left, and of course, curious as to why he's suddenly back when it was so important for him to leave in the first place.

 Seth sees this carnival as the perfect opportunity to show Summer how sorry he is and how much he still cares for her. He plans a single grand gesture that will break down all of her walls that she's been putting up all summer, according to Seth, of course. Seth remembers when he stood on top of the kissing booth (in season one) and declared his love for Summer.

He's determined to do that again at the carnival. Considering how last year's carnival went, he has every reason to think that the carnival also kicks off their love lives.

Seth tells her he just wants her. Her reply? "No! No you don't. You had me. You had me at Chrismukkah in a freakin' Wonder-Woman costume and you chose Anna! You had me three months ago and you left!...It seems that you only want me when you can't have me. You like the chase and that's all. So you know what? You can have it. I'm going home." This confrontation takes place as Summer and Zach are leaving the carnival.
