Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the series opener, "Strange Love", Sookie met her very first vampire. Where was she when she met Bill?

Answer: at work

Bill came into Merlotte's to more or less announce his presence to Bon Temps (pronounced Bon-tom). Sam Merlotte's supply of Tru Blood had long since expired, so Bill ordered red wine to justify staying awhile. Sookie sensed his presence immediately and their connection was solidified when she saved him from Matt and Denise Rattray. They were vampire drainers, and attacked Bill outside of the bar. Sookie kicked a little butt and saved Bill. Her best friend Tara worked briefly at a Wal-Mart like store, but quit when she was forced to listen to a woman complain. Sookie's boss and bar owner Sam Merlotte was united with Tara in mutual worry over Sookie and Bill's obvious attraction to one another. Sam was also in love with Sookie, which she discovered when she accidentally read his mind. Oh, did I mention she can read minds?

Anna Paquin plays Sookie Stackhouse and Stephen Moyer plays Bill Compton. Alan Ball of "Six Feet Under" acclaim adapted the Southern Vampire series for HBO.
2. Bill saved Sookie's life after the Rattrays' attack in "The First Taste", by drinking FROM her.

Answer: False

He killed the Rattrays in the parking lot of Merlotte's. Then he carried Sookie to a nearby waterside and tore open his own wrist. She protested briefly, asking if it would turn her into a vampire. She was severely beaten and on her way to her deathbed.

He pressed his open wound to her mouth and she drank heavily of his blood. The scene was disturbingly graphic, bringing Charlaine Harris' written word into extreme living color. After she drank and rested, Bill did lick her outside wounds to help them heal faster, but that was not what saved her life.

While she slept, he drank from the Rattrays, then deposited them on the ground outside their trailer. He destroyed the entire area in such a way it appeared as though a tornado swept through just that tiny parcel of land.

At the end of the episode, Sookie went to see Bill at his home, and was welcomed at the door by three not so friendly vampires.
3. Sookie read the mind of one of the human donors in Bill's house. What disease did the man have that was dangerous to vampires?

Answer: Hepatitis D

Bill explained later that this disease, which was apparently relatively harmless to humans, was not deadly to vamps. It did, however, cause them to be sick for as long as a month. In the novel "Dead Until Dark", Charlaine wrote the disease as being called Sino-Aids. The human with Hep D was named Jerry.

In this episode ("Mine"), Sookie also found Dawn dead in her apartment, and Tara slept with her boss Sam Merlotte. Tara told Sam he should be honest with Sookie about the fact he was in love with her. Sam was not ready to say it out loud, but he did allow her to hear it off of him in the first episode. Sookie chose to ignore, just like she did in the books.
4. In episode three, "Mine", who did Sam wish aloud would come to Bon Temps and "slay" Bill Compton?

Answer: Buffy or Blade

I love it when someone recognizes talent! Sam told his dog he wished Buffy or Blade would arrive in town to slay Bill. He didn't really mean it, but was frustrated about Sookie's affections for the vampire. Now about that dog..
5. Bill took Sookie to Fangtasia to meet the man in charge of their area, northern Louisiana. Once there, who did Sookie NOT meet for the first time?

Answer: Alcide- man in charge of Louisiana

Eric ran the vampire ship, so to speak, for northern Louisiana. Some vampires were losing control in Bon Temps, as both Maudette and Dawn had been murdered by one.. at least that is what appeared to be true. Bill took Sookie to Shreveport to meet him, but they were first greeted by Pam as they entered the fang banger night club. Fangtasia was a place where the suckers could find willing suckees to feed their carnal needs. Eric sat off from the crowd in a throne like setting, looking regal and dangerous. I believe in the books Eric's hair was longer, he was taller, and a bit more rugged in appearance.

After she met Pam, Sookie met bartender Long Shadow, a vampire with a mixed appearance of Mexican and Native American features. She met Eric last, and the two shared a quick, but immediate, attraction to one another. With season two already ordered, I suggest TV only fans put a pin in that thought and save it for later..

This is all from the episode "Escape from the Dragon House". Alcide may appear later in the series.

He plays a part in Sookie's life later, and is from Mississippi.
6. After Bill delivered a fairly successful recounting of his life during the Civil War in "Sparks Fly Out", a beloved character was found dead at the end of the episode. Who found her?

Answer: Sookie

Bill was able to tell the Descendants of the Glorious Dead about his time in the war, and how he never made it home to his family. We later learned that he did make it home. He was turned into a vampire just a few short miles from home, and returned there long enough to see his wife and children one last time.

He was turned by a female vampire who'd been preying on soldiers as they came looking for food and shelter. At the end of the episode, after an unsuccessful date with Sam, Sookie returned home and found her grandmother dead on the kitchen floor. Lois Smith played Sookie and Jason's grandmother Adele Stackhouse. Lois has also appeared in "Fried Green Tomatoes", "Twister", "ER", and "Grey's Anatomy".
7. In the sixth episode, "Cold Ground", Sookie faced the initial aftermath of her grandmother's murder. Which event did NOT take place in this episode?

Answer: We found out why the dog was checking in on Sookie

I thought this was a good choice because though now I see it as very obvious, the reason for the dog was not known until near the end of book one. Season one has followed the first book very closely, so I give kudos to Alan Ball. Sam and Tara had sex again in this episode, as did Jason and that blonde divorcée. Tara promised Sam that their relationship would mean something if they had sex again, but bailed on him when the guilt her mother had placed on her finally kicked in.

She left Sam and went to her mother, Lettie Mae, who claimed to have a demon inside her that needed exorcising.

When Jason came to the house after hearing the news, he smacked Sookie hard across the face. Tara became instantly enraged and shoved him out of Sookie's bedroom. Like most of Bon Temps, Jason's gut reaction was to blame Sookie's vampire connections for his grandmother's death.

Then, in an act of defiance, he invited Gran's brother, Uncle Bartlet. Uncle Bartlet has a history with Sookie, which may or may not be revealed in season one. Jason apologized to Sookie for his actions after she bailed on the funeral service, but she told him that they had nothing between them.

This was the best episode of the series to date.
8. Tara agreed to pay for her mother's exorcism.

Answer: True

In "Cold Ground", Tara's alcoholic mother claimed that a demon inhabited her body. This demon was the one who was responsible for all of her wrong doings, but it would cost over $400 to have it exorcised. In the subsequent episode, "Burning House of Love", Tara agreed to pay the cost of the exorcism when she realized that her mother believed this demon inhabitation to be real. Tara saw the possibility of helping her mother, just based on the woman's own belief system. So, they walked out in the woods on a creepy dirt road until a woman appeared to lead them back to her tiny trailer home.

She placed stones onto her mother, while Tara watched and questioned all that occurred. Then, the demon left her mom and went into the body of a nearby caged possum.

The woman then drowned the possum before the demon could escape.
9. Did Bill ever feed off of Sookie in season one?

Answer: Yes

She allowed him to feed from her the first time they made love in "Cold Ground". When she asked if he'd need to do it regularly, he said if it was okay with her he would. No one was too happy to find out about it, least of all Sam Merlotte. Sookie used a scarf to cover her fang marks and Sam pulled it off of her during her shift at the bar in "Burning House of Love".
10. Who witnessed Sam Merlotte running through the swamp just after Malcolm and Diane's vamp nest was set ablaze?

Answer: Andy and Terry Bellefleur

Andy and Terry were fishing when Terry spotted a very nude Sam running like wind through the swamp. Terry pointed it out and Andy said that it was Sam. Terry commented afterward, "yeah I done that a lot." Todd Lowe plays the war vet Terry Bellefleur. Fans may remember him as Lane's husband Zack on "Gilmore Girls". In the book series Terry was a veteran of the Vietnam war, so much older in age. I believe he was heavily scarred in the books as well.

So far, Layfette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis) is my favorite character in the series. Stay tuned for another season one quiz on this series.
