Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the weapons West used in many episodes was a derringer. He usually had it up his sleeve. On occasion, he carried it in two pieces. Where did he keep the pieces?

Answer: in his boot heels

West kept the two halves of the derringer in his boot heels. After he put the derringer together, he would get two bullets from his belt buckle.
2. Another item that West used frequently was a lock pick. Where did West keep the lock pick?

Answer: in the lapel of his jacket

This may have been West's most used item. It opened anything from door locks, to jail cell doors, to handcuffs.
3. In the pilot episode, "The Night of the Inferno", West killed Juan Manolo with a sword. Where was the sword hidden?

Answer: in a cue stick

West distracts Manolo with an exploding cue ball, then pulls the sword from the cue stick and throws it across the room into Manolo's chest.
4. In "The Night of the Returning Dead", a Confederate night rider is harassing a wealthy rancher. To stop the rider, the agents set a trap and West rigs a gun to fire an explosive shell. Where was the gun located?

Answer: in his saddle horn

The gun was set to fire when someone mounted West's horse and grabbed the saddle horn to pull themselves up. The trap worked, however the explosive shell had no effect on the ghost rider.
5. In "The Night of the Firebrand", West is left hanging from a post with crates of dynamite nearby. West manages to swing over a break open some barrels of water to extinguish the fuse. What does West use to release him from the rope binding him?

Answer: his boot knife

West swung over and hooked one foot on the rope and then used his boot knife on the other foot to cut the rope.
6. In "The Night of the Firebrand", when West is tied up in O'Riley's camp, Artie punches West and then slips West a device to free himself. What is the device?

Answer: a snuffbox with a sliding knife blade

Artie takes a pinch of snuff from the snuffbox when he arrives in O'Riley's camp while he is talking to O'Riley.
7. In "The Night of the Big Blackmail", West and Gordon have to sneak into the German consulate to replace some stolen film. One of Gordon's inventions, a chemical leech which will support a man's weight for 16 seconds, prevents the agents from falling into a trap. What was the trap?

Answer: a pair of rollers with metal spikes

West had stolen the original bogus film on an earlier visit to the consulate and had to replace the film with a revised version to prevent embarrassment to President Grant.
8. In "The Night of the Janus", agent Jeremy Pike protects himself from being drugged when he enters the United States Mint. What does Pike use to prevent the drug from entering his blood system?

Answer: clear rubber gloves on his hands

The drug was administered when anyone entering the Mint had the back of their hand stamped. Pike wore clear rubber gloves over his hands so that the glove was stamped, not his hand.
9. In "The Night of the Man Eating House", the agents have to stop Liston Day's plan to return Texas to Spanish rule. Day plans to infest the state with plague carrying rats. What does West use to stop the clock from striking 12:00 and releasing the rats?

Answer: a throwing knife in his jacket pocket

West threw the knife at the clock, and stuck it in the face of the clock, to prevent the hand from reaching the twelve.
10. In "The Night of the Bubbling Death", West crosses a pit full of acid by what means?

Answer: He shoots a rope across and then uses a pulley up his sleeve to get across.

West shoots an arrowhead with an attached rope into the wall on the other side with his derringer. A pulley then comes out of his sleeve, which he hooks over the rope and rolls across.
