Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Game 60: "Super C", the second of three "Contra" games for the NES, is an port of the 1988 arcade title "Super Contra". The NES game featured three levels unique to its port. Which level listed is not one of the unique levels?

Answer: A tank level

Konami released "Super C" for the NES in 1990. The famous Konami code can be used on this game, though it will only give you ten lives rather than the famous thirty. The game was released as "Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces" in the Pal region.

"Super C" replaced the so called 3D levels of the original Contra with vertical scrollers, and the NES featured three exclusive levels: a mountain level, a high tech base level, and an alien nest".
2. Game 59: Imagine "The Legend of Zelda" or "Metroid" without a save option or password feature, and you'd have what game?

Answer: Rygar

"Rygar" is one of the great lost classics for the NES. The game is severely hampered or even damaged by the fact that it has NO save or password feature. During the early NES era game developers were branching out into longer, more challenging and epic games. Rygar is every bit as long and epic as the two "Zelda" titles, "Metroid", "Kid Icarus", the "Castlevania" games, etc, and the fact it doesn't have a save option is just mind boggling, and something that would never happen today.

"Rygar" is based on an earlier beat 'em up arcade game of the same title, although the arcade game has almost nothing to do with the NES game, being completely different gaming experiences.

During the NES era, a lot of games became big hits because of their exposure in "Nintendo Power". It is notable that "Rygar", easily one of the more challenging titles, only makes ONE appearance in the early "Nintendo Power" magazines, and then only one time in "Counselor's Corner". This was on the very first issue of "Nintendo Power".
3. Game 58: Nintendo released "Mega Man 6" in 1994. It is well known that Nintendo Power ran contests for players to design robot masters, and "Knight Man" and "Wind Man" were the winning designs and thus included in the game. Before that, all previous Robot Masters were designed by Keiji Inafune and other staff at Capcom.

Answer: False

"Mega Man 6" is was the last "Mega Man" game released on the NES, and one of the very last games published for the system period, which may explain why Capcom did not initially want to publish the game in North America. As gamers were abandoning the NES for the newer 16 bit consoles, Nintendo themselves published "Mega Man 6" on the North American shores, which may explain while the conceptual art looks different from earlier titles. The game has never been released in the PAL region.

Beginning with "Mega Man II", Capcom had contests in Japan for players to design Robot Masters. There are several Robot Masters in the six NES titles that Japanese players designed.
4. Game 57: Several members of the staff who developed "Rad Racer" have been involved in what iconic video game franchise?

Answer: Final Fantasy

There are several notable items about "Rad Racer". Nasir Gebelli programmed the title, Nobuo Uematsu provided the music, and Hironobu Sakaguchi was the game's principal designer. All three would later be involved in the "Final Fantasy" series.

The game was one of the few developed for the Famicom 3D System, and featured so called "3D" play. The NES classic film "The Wizard" also features a rather infamous scene of Lucas, the film's primary antagonist, playing through the first level of this game with the the Power Glove.
5. Game 56: J. R. R. Tolkien shows up in the strangest places in our culture. In the 1987 "Wizards and Warriors" game, Kuros, the game's hero, must travel through the eight realms of what Kingdom, whose name is directly lifted from Tolkien?

Answer: Elrond

The evil wizard Malkil has kidnapped Kuros's love interest, and it is up to Kuros to go save her naturally. He must go through the eight realms of the Kingdom of Elrond, searching for gems and diamonds. He cannot exit the area until he has gotten the prerequisite amount of gems, much like the later Sega Genesis game "The Jungle Book".

The game is quite difficult, but fortunately features unlimited continues, with the only penalty for continuing is the score being reset to 0. The original "Mega Man" uses continues in the same manner method. There are a few other NES titles that could have used unlimited continues (I'm looking at you, North American version of "Ninja Gaiden III" and "Rygar"!).
6. Game 55: What game famously misspells one of the character's names as "Bimmy" during a cutscene, rather than "Billy"?

Answer: Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones

The third NES "Double Dragon" title, Billy and Jimmy must rescue the damsel in distress Marion yet again. The game is notable for additional characters. After you defeat the second boss (Chin Seimei, a Chinese martial artist) and third boss (Yagyu Ranzou, a Japanese ninja), they join your party and, like "Castlevania III", you can now play as them.

The game's script was completely rewritten for the NES. In the arcade and Famicom version, the final boss was a resurrected Cleopatra and Marion did not appear in the game at all. In the NES version, Marion is actually the final boss, as she has been demonically possessed by Queen Noiram.

The opening intro of "Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones" misspells Billy as Bimmy.
7. Game 54: Nintendo had very strict religious guidelines laid had, which required removal of all religious content. However, somehow one game got made a reference to Satan that got by the Nintendo censors. After you beat this game the first time, you get the message that you really didn't beat the game, and that "THIS ROOM IS AN ILLUSION AND IS A TRAP DEVISUT BY SATAN. GO AHEAD DAUNTLESSLY! MAKE RAPID PROGRES!" The above typos were in the actual ending. What's the game?

Answer: Ghosts 'N Goblins

"Ghosts 'N Goblin" is one of the most notoriously difficult games on a console known for its difficult games. You control the knight Arthur, who with one hit is stripped to his undies and in the next hit dies. If you finally manage to beat the game the first time (in and of itself quite a feat), you get the message that no, you're in a room devised by Satan and you have to start over to get to the real end.

So you're thinking, ok, maybe it has a cool ending. Nope, nada, wrongo! This is the NES remember? You beat the game a second time, and get the message "Congraturation. This story is happy end. Thank you. Being the wise and courageour knight that you are you feel strongth welling in your body. Return to starting point. Challenge again!"

And yes, all the types are present in the original text of the game.
8. Game 53: What football game was the first ever to have the complete NFL license, allowing the developer to have both the NFL teams and NFL players instead of only one or the other?

Answer: Tecmo Super Bowl

"Tecmo Super Bowl" was the first game to have both the NFL license and the Player's association license as well. Having both licenses meant for the first time a football game could have both real teams and real players. Prior games had official dealings with the NFL but no game had both licenses, making "Tecmo Super Bowl" unprecedented. The game was based on the 1991 preseason game roster, and used the 1991 NFL schedule.

"Tecmo Super Bowl" has become a cult hit, and has become one of the most extensively hacked video games of all time, with new and updated rosters. There are also active tournaments for the game ongoing as well.
9. Game 52: "Adventures of Lolo 3" appeared under what title in Japan?

Answer: Adventures of Lolo 2

Hal is the publisher of the Lolo series. They are puzzle games, and some of the best puzzle games the NES has to offer. The gameplay is difficult and deep. It's also one of the few NES titles that allows the player to commit harikari, or suicide, by pressing the Select button because due to the actions of the player the puzzle has become impossible.

Unsurprisingly, "Adventures of Lolo 3" does not have the same name in Japan as it does in other regions. Like the "Final Fantasy" series, which is well known for renaming the early titles due to lack of release in all regions, the "Eggerland" series (as it is known in Japan) have different titles as well.

There are five Famicom "Eggerland" titles. The first three "Eggerland" titles are "Eggerland" (1987, Famicom Disk System), "Eggerland - Revival of the Labyrinth" (1988, Famicom), and "Eggerland - Departure to Creation" (1988, Famicom Disk System).

Hal did not publish the original "Adventures of Lolo" in Japan. They instead released "Adventures of Lolo 2" and "Adventures of Lolo 3" as "Adventures of Lolo" and "Adventures of Lolo 2" respectively.

There are numerous differences between "Adventures of Lolo 2" and "Adventures of Lolo 3" and their Japanese counterparts, including higher difficulty and completely redesigned maps for the Japanese versions. Also, Moby, the whale creature, appears in Level 9 rather than Level 11, as it does in the US version.
10. Game 51: Another puzzle game, this one features Nintendo's most famous character Mario. Who designed "Dr. Mario"?

Answer: Gunpei Yokoi

In order to capitalize on the success of "Tetris", Nintendo did their own variation on the game called "Dr. Mario", which fairly similar. The original NES game featured multiplayer, which "Tetris" lacked. Gunpei Yokoi, Miyamoto's mentor and whose primary brainchild was "Metroid" and the Gameboy, was the primary developer behind "Dr. Mario".
