Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Lord of the Rings Online" is based on the novel "Lord of the Rings" by what author?

Answer: J.R.R. Tolkien

The book was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, taking him nearly twelve years to complete. Tolkien had previously penned "The Hobbit", an account of what happened about 60 years prior to the setting of "Lord of the Rings".

J.K. Rowling wrote the "Harry Potter" series, C.S. Lewis was a friend of Tolkien who penned the "Narnia" series ("The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe") and Stephen King... well he writes all manner of horror.
2. There are four playable races that you can choose as your non-monster character: Men, Hobbits, Elves and Dwarves. Which race may appear unassuming yet are very dependable and resourceful when required (as long as they have their six square meals a day and a pinch of Longbottom Leaf to put in their pipes)?

Answer: Hobbits

When you start the game you create your character (or "toon" as it is sometimes referred as) choosing from one of four races. The race that you choose determines a number of the traits that you have and what area in the world map you start from. Basically this is the first choice of character development you make on your RPG character.
3. When beginning the game using the race of men, what settlement do you start in?

Answer: Archet

After the "Instance: Jail Break" which introduces players to the basic movements of the character, we find ourselves in the settlement of Archet. Archet and its surrounding districts are where you begin levelling your character and cannot leave the area until you do the "Instance: The Assault of Archet" where Blackwold brigands attack and set fire to the village.

Bree is the main settlement of Bree-land, home of the Prancing Pony. Combe is a village immediately south of Archet and is the gateway to Chetwood. Buckland isn't a settlement but an area lying between The Old Forest and the Brandywine River which holds the villages of Newbury and Crickhollow.
4. After choosing the race of your character you then pick what class they are. Classes determine skills and abilities and are the way your character reacts to the world. Which race cannot be a warden?

Answer: Dwarf

Wardens are a specialist class that are great acting as "tanks" with their ability to both deal and withstand attacks. The warden class is not initially available to Free-To-Play (FTP) or even VIP players. It must be purchased from the LOTRO Store or obtained by purchasing the "Mines of Moria Expansion".

The warden class is available to all races except Dwarf.
5. A character can take up a vocation from any crafting hall. The Explorer vocation is well suited for those who love to explore and gather resources. Three professions make up the vocation of Explorer: the first is Forester, second is Prospector and the third is a bit closer to home. What is the third profession?

Answer: Tailor

The explorer vocation is made up of Tailor which make light and medium armour, Forester which prepares wood for woodworkers and hides for tailors and Prospector that gathers and refines ore for metalsmiths, weaponsmiths and jewellers.
6. When creating your character, once you have established the race you choose the nationality. This is the region or area that the character comes from. If your character's nationality was "of Lindon", what race would your character be?

Answer: Elf

The nationality determines the look of the character (skin tone, eye colour etc.) but can be modified before saving the new toon.

Elves are the race who would hail from Lindon. It is the green lands of the Elves between Ered Luin and the Sea, where Cirdan the Shipwright rules. This is home to the Grey Havens.
7. This particular class is available to all races. They use ancient songs and lore to attack foes and provide healing and buffs for fellowships. Their name may not sound fearsome but they are a character to be reckoned with. What is the name this class?

Answer: Minstrel

The premise (or lore) behind the power source of minstrels is in Tolkien's works. The universe of Middle earth was begun by the Ainur, spiritual beings who created everything through music. The minstrel tapped into this power.

The bard is a NPC (non-playable character) found in larger settlements who are important for equipping and adjusting traits as well as selling musical instruments used for player-made music or as weapons for minstrels.

There are no characters or classes known as jesters in "Lord of the Rings Online", however they were good for a laugh in the medieval times. Tavern keeps are NPCs whom you will find in the many taverns scattered throughout Middle Earth. They sell provisions, healer potions and salves and are regularly involved in quests.
8. A character's statistics consist of various attributes that determine the strengths of the character. Increasing the main attributes boosts ratings in other attributes. There are two main attributes to boost for a Champion: the first is Might. What is the second attribute?

Answer: Vitality

What gear you equip on your character, what potions or food you take and even who you hang around with influences attributes. It is the primary way you tweak your toon.

Vitality increases Morale which is basically your health in the game. It also increases how quickly Morale regenerates outside of combat so is useful for melee type characters.

Agility increases a character's ability to evade and parry as well as boosting the ranged damage and critical hits that can be dealt. Very useful for Hunters and Wardens.

Will increases Power and how quickly it regenerates. It also boosts the healing and tactical skills so is useful for classes such as Minstrel, Lore-master and Rune-keeper.

Fate increases how quickly Power and Morale regenerate whilst fighting as well as critical and tactical skills. It is a good general buffer of all attributes but doesn't favour any particular class.
9. The reputation your character has with any faction determines how they will relate to you. What is the highest level of reputation your character can have with any faction?

Answer: Kindred

Each reputation level brings benefits such as discounted travel and purchases for the character.

As a Kindred the faction has basically accepted your character as one of them. Ally is the level below Kindred. Fellowship is when players join together to complete quests in common and has nothing to do with reputation and Best Friends Forever... well let's just say that adolescent terms of endearment have no place in Middle Earth!
10. The in-game currency system utilises various tokens between different factions, however the universal currency is gold, silver and copper coins. 100 copper coins equals 1 silver coin; so how many silver coins equate to 1 gold coin?

Answer: 1,000

The lower copper to silver conversion allows money growth in the earlier part of the game whilst the higher silver to gold conversion balances the monetary system as the character levels up and rewards increase.
