Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are three skill areas in "Mass Effect". Each class is either a specialist in one skill area, or a hybrid between two. Which of the following is not one of the three skill areas?

Answer: Diplomacy

The three skill areas are combat, tech, and biotics. The three specialization classes are the Soldier (combat), the Engineer (tech) and the Adept (biotic). The three hybrid classes are the Infiltrator (combat/tech), the Sentinel (biotic/tech), and the Vanguard (biotic/combat).

Combat talents are focused around armor, health, and weapon proficiency. Tech focuses on disabling the enemy, such as removing their shields, overheating their weapons, and preventing them from using biotic or tech talents against you. Biotic talents involve the manipulation of mass effect fields, giving biotics the ability to lift, throw, and crush their enemies.

Diplomacy is separate, and is influenced by your Charm and Intimidate scores. Charm and Intimidate are talents only available to Shepard (the player character). Charm opens up Paragon dialogue options, while Intimidate opens Renegade dialogue options.
2. What is the most common weapon talent shared by the different player classes (excluding bonus talents)?

Answer: Pistols

All player classes except the Sentinel have access to the Pistols talent.

Five classes have access to the Pistols talent, two classes have access to the Shotguns talent (Soldier and Vanguard) and the Sniper Rifles talent (Infiltrator and Soldier), and only the Soldier has access to the Assault Rifles talent.

The Sentinel's default weapon is still the pistol. The Sentinel's class talent increases pistol damage and accuracy, and grants Marksman at level 6.
3. What kind of skill is Neural Shock?

Answer: Tech

Neural Shock is a tech ability given by leveling up the Medicine talent, naturally available to the Sentinel (biotic/tech hybrid) and Engineer (tech specialist).

Neural Shock causes organic enemies to fall over in pain, and induces toxic damage. This is particularly useful against organic enemies that charge at you, such as husks, Thorian Creepers, and krogan.
4. Can Engineers use assault rifles?

Answer: Yes

All classes can use all weapons, though not all classes can get training in all weapons. An Engineer can use an assault rifle, but unless he/she has the Assault Rifles talent selected as a bonus talent, the Engineer cannot zoom in, and has to use the base damage and accuracy of the assault rifle.

Classes that do not have the Sniper Rifles talent can use the scope of a sniper rifle, but it will sway wildly.

It is almost always best to use weapons that you have put talent points into, and to modify your combat style to fit your preferred weapon.

There are achievements for using abilities a certain number of times. When you gain one of these achievements, it will unlock the corresponding talent as a bonus talent when you start a new career. For example, if you kill 150 enemies with an assault rifle, when you make a new career, provided it's not a Soldier, you will have the option to add the Assault Rifles talent as a bonus talent.
5. The different species in "Mass Effect" have different body shapes and sizes, and generally require species-specific armor. However, there are two species that share the same type. Which two species can wear the same armor?

Answer: Asari and human

There are four different armor types: human, krogan, turian, and quarian. Asari physiology is close to human, and so the two species share the same armor.

Liara, your only asari squad member, can only wear light armor.
6. Which of the following is not an attribute of omni-tools?

Answer: Tech damage bonus

From a practical standpoint, omni-tools have many functions, but from a gameplay standpoint, they are closely associated with tech abilities. Omni-tools provide a shield bonus, a tech cooldown bonus, and a med recharge bonus.

Tech damage is a product of the tech proximity mines that Overload, Damping, and Sabotage are carried in. Tech damage can be increased by leveling up the Decryption (Sabotage) talent. Leveling up the Damping talent will increase the blast radius, and the Hacking talent decreases the recharge time. Medi-gel cooldown time can be reduced by leveling up the Medicine talent, and First Aid increases the amount of health that Medi-gel restores.
7. Which class has no armor talent?

Answer: Sentinel

All classes are able to wear light armor, but only five of the six playable classes have armor talents.

The Combat Armor talent is only available to Soldiers (combat specialists). It lets them wear medium armor, and, when leveled up, heavy armor.

Infiltrators (combat/tech) and Vanguards (biotic/combat) have access to the Tactical Armor, which lets them wear medium armor when leveled up.

Engineers (tech specialists) and Adepts (biotic specialists) have access to the Basic Armor talent, which only allows light armor, but will increase damage reduction and hardening.

Sentinels have both the Electronics and Barrier talents, making them much more shield oriented. Electronics increases your base shield capacity, and Barrier provides a temporary large boost in shield strength. Sentinels also stay alive by using Sabotage to overheat enemy weapons, Stasis to freeze enemies entirely, and Neural Shock to stun enemies. They have access to both First Aid and Medicine, so they can heal their squad thoroughly and frequently.
8. Just as there are six player classes to cover the three specialization classes and the three hybrid classes, you will be able to recruit six squad members who will cover the same spectrum. This means you can have a balanced squad by bringing along members that do not share your skill set. Which squad member is a Tech specialist?

Answer: Tali'Zorah nar Rayya

You have one squad member to fill each of the six roles (specialists or hybrids), but their classes are not necessarily the same as the possible player classes.

Ashley and Kaidan, the two human squad members, are a Soldier and Sentinel respectively, which are identical to the player classes.

Garrus is a combat/tech hybrid, but differs from the Infiltrator in that he has the Assault Rifles and Assault Training talents instead of Pistols and Fitness.

Wrex is a biotic/combat hybrid, but unlike the Vanguard, has access to the Assault Rifles, Combat Armor, Fitness, and Stasis instead of Pistols, Tactical Armor, Assault Training, and Lift.

Tali is a tech specialist, but has access to the Shotguns talent in lieu of Medicine.

Liara is a biotic specialist, but lacks the Pistols and Basic Armor talents of the Adept, and has First Aid and Electronics instead. Liara can be equipped with both a bio-amp and an omni-tool, while the Adept can only equip a bio-amp.
9. There are a number of different special ammo upgrades that you can use in your weapons and those of your squad. Each upgrade provides different advantages and trade-offs that can be beneficial in different situations. Which of the following ammo upgrades would have no benefit against synthetic enemies?

Answer: Shredder rounds

Shredder rounds provide a damage bonus against organic enemies, and thus no bonus against synthetic enemies. The synthetic equivalent of shredder rounds are tungsten rounds. Because it is very rare that organic and synthetic enemies are encountered together, one common practice is to keep both type of ammunition available, and swap them out as necessary.

Chemical rounds have a lingering effect on a target, inducing poison that damages the target for a few seconds after it has been hit.

Phasic rounds decrease a weapon's base damage, but also have a degree of shield bypass. This can be convenient against enemies with low health that manage to recharge their shields. One example of this is fighting turrets. Usually turrets are fought from the Mako. Destroying enemies in the Mako yields only half the experience points as when on foot, so it is beneficial to weaken turrets with the Mako until they have very low health left, and then jump out for the kill shot. Sometimes, when there are multiple enemies/turrets, you will have to retreat before you can get a kill shot, and turrets can regenerate shields quickly. Instead of whittling down a turret's full shields to take out its last sliver of health, adding a shield bypass can greatly save time.
10. There are three different classes of armor: light, medium, and heavy. Not all species have access to each kind of armor. Which of the following armor types does NOT exist?

Answer: Quarian medium armor

Human armor comes in the light, medium, and heavy varieties. Turian armor, wearable only by Garrus, can only be light or medium. Because Garrus cannot gain access to heavy armor, there would be no point in including turian heavy armor. Quarian armor only has light variants. Because Tali is the only quarian squad member, for similar reasons, there is no need to include medium or heavy quarian armor. Krogan armor comes in both medium and heavy varieties, but not light.
