Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the leader of Cerberus?

Answer: Illusive Man

The Illusive Man (played by Martin Sheen) is the head of Cerberus, a group that pushes for a stronger human voice in galactic politics. Cerberus has vast amounts of resources behind it, has research cells, and a military force. In "Mass Effect" Cerberus performed unethical experiments on unsuspecting settlements, including the study of Husks, Thorian Creepers, and rachni.

In "Mass Effect 2", the Illusive Man funds the Lazarus Project, which takes over two years and over 4 billion credits to complete. The Lazarus Project is what brought Commander Shepard back to life after the Normandy SR1 was destroyed. After Shepard is revived, the Illusive Man becomes Shepard's "employer". The Illusive Man also had Cerberus build the Normandy SR2 for Shepard.

Throughout the game, the Illusive Man provides Shepard with information on possible squad members and updates on the Collectors, though not always directly. He also withholds certain information in order to manipulate events.
2. In the broken down Collector Cruiser, you can get one of three new advanced weapons. Which type is not available?

Answer: Pistol

When you reach this point in the game, you will be given the option of obtaining training in assault rifles, shotguns, or sniper rifles, or to acquire a new weapon of that class if you all ready have training with that class (e.g. Vanguards, who start with shotgun training, can receive weapon training in assault rifle or sniper rifles, or they can take the M-300 Claymore).

A semantic point about "Mass Effect 2" is that the term "pistol" was dropped from the first game in favor of "heavy pistol" designation. All classes can use heavy pistols, and there is no advanced pistol that you can obtain at this point in the game.
3. Which of the following is not a hub? *Hubs are locations where you cannot use weapons, that have shops, and where you can start many missions from.

Answer: Pragia

There are four hubs in "Mass Effect 2": Omega Station, the Citadel, Illium, and Tuchanka.

Hubs are where you often talk to characters to gain information, perform less violent assignments, and initiate main missions (recruitment/loyalty missions). Hubs also all have shops where you can buy weapon and armor upgrades, as well as star charts, model ships and many other things.

Pragia is where Jack's Loyalty Mission takes place.

On Pragia you make your way through the Teltin Facility where Cerberus experimented on Jack to make her the ultimate killer biotic. You find that a few Blood Pack mercenaries are also trying to salvage the facility. At the end of the mission you plant a nuclear device to destroy the facility and help Jack get some closure.
4. Jacob's loyalty mission involves which of his family members?

Answer: Father

Jacob's Loyalty Mission takes place on Aeia, the planet on which the Hugo Gernsback crash-landed nearly ten years before the events of "Mass Effect 2". Ronald Taylor, Jacob's father, stepped in as acting captain after Captain Harris Fairchild died in the crash.

Initially after the crash, the crew had to eat the local vegetation while the officers repaired the rescue beacon. The vegetation eroded higher mental functions, and eventually the men were exiled (with the exception of a few guards) and the women were kept for the five remaining officers. After the beacon was completed, four officers were killed within a week, leaving Ronald Taylor as the last remaining sane person on the planet, and in complete control of the remaining food stores and the security mechs.

After many years on Aeia, the exiled men became feral and came back and attacked Ronald, which prompted him to activate the beacon. His plan was to use his mech forces to keep him safe while waiting for a rescue ship.

Shepard and Jacob fight through the feral men and the mech security until they finally meet Ronald, where he tries to sell them a story that justifies his actions. Shepard can influence Jacob on how to handle the situation, and Ronald's fate is ultimately in Shepard's hands.
5. Which of the following is not an ammo type in "Mass Effect 2"?

Answer: Chemical

There are six different ammo powers in "Mass Effect 2". The basic three are: Incendiary, Cryo, and Disrupter. The others are loyalty powers: Warp (Jack), Shredder (Thane), and Armor-Piercing (Garrus).

Incendiary rounds will set targets on fire, making them stumble around in fear for a small while. They are also extremely effective against armor. Cryo ammo will freeze unprotected targets solid. Frozen targets cannot move, take extra damage, and can even be shattered. Disrupter ammo is especially good against shields and robotic enemies (mechs and geth).

Warp ammo increases damage against biotic barriers, Shredder ammo deals extra damage to health meters (unprotected targets), and Armor piercing ammo does extra damage against both armor and health.

Chemical rounds are an ammo type that could be equipped in "Mass Effect". Chemical rounds, and the more advanced Polonium rounds, induced low levels of sickness in a target, causing damage over time, and effectively negating any regenerative abilities (e.g. krogan).
6. The Normandy 2 gets attacked and boarded by which group?

Answer: Collectors

After acquiring the IFF from the derelict Reaper, EDI will start installing it on the Normandy so that it can safely approach the Collector base without being instantly blasted to pieces. Shepard and the team have to leave on the shuttle for their mission while the IFF is being installed. During the installation procedure, the system broadcasts the Normandy's location to the Collectors, who come to claim the ship.

The Collector attack on the Normandy SR2 is one of the most memorable parts of the game, notably because this is the only time you do not play as Shepard. During this short mission, you, take control of Joker in order to save the ship by unshackling EDI.
7. EDI is Virtual Intelligence (VI).

Answer: False

Virtual Intelligences (VIs) are extremely useful, and all Alliance ships have one to coordinate offensive and defensive systems, while also dealing with the sheer amount of data that has to be interpreted and applied during an engagement.

Artificial Intelligences, and research done to create one, are illegal. The quarians, who inadvertently created a neural network that became the geth, were stripped of their embassy on the Citadel because of these laws. While still mechanical geniuses, quarians strongly dislike the notion of AIs, and the geth in particular. This makes Tali pause when she hears about the Normandy's AI, EDI.

"EDI" stands for "Enhanced Defense Intelligence", and she is much more capable than a standard VI. During missions, she will often communicate with Shepard, giving directions while hacking enemy systems (doors, automated defenses, etc.). During ship-to-ship combat she operates the Normandy's electronic warfare and cyberwarfare suites.
8. Who is not a potential love interest for Shepard?

Answer: Mordin

As with "Mass Effect", players can choose to pursue a romantic subplot. The official romantic options (They grant the Paramour achievement) for a female Shepard are Jacob, Garrus, or Thane. Male Shepards can choose to pursue Miranda, Jack, or Tali.

You can attempt a romantic relationship with Samara, but she will ultimately refuse. If you decided to save Morinth, you may attempt a relationship with her after the Suicide Mission, but this will result in a critical mission failure (death).

Yeoman Kelly Chambers can also be romanced, though this is not considered an official romance option because it does not grant the Paramour achievement. To do this Shepard has to flirt with Kelly when the opportunities arise until eventually there is a private dinner. After the suicide mission, if Kelly survives, and Shepard breaks up with any other love interest, then Shepard will have to option of inviting Kelly up to his/her quarters.

Mordin will offer advice on interspecies relationships or relationships involving biotics. He is not, however, a love interest.
9. Who of the following cannot use a sniper rifle?

Answer: Tali

In "Mass Effect", all characters could use all weapons, despite not having special training. Characters using weapons without training just meant that their accuracy and damage were reduced.

In "Mass Effect 2", characters are only able to use weapons that they specialize in. Each character has two specializations. Garrus and Legion can use sniper rifles and assault rifles, Thane uses sniper rifles and sub-machine guns, and Tali can use shotguns and heavy pistols.

Ironically, there are quite a few official "Mass Effect" screenshots and wallpapers that depict Tali wielding a sniper rifle, despite having no training with that weapon class in either game.
10. Which relay do you use to get to the suicide mission?

Answer: Omega

The Omega 4 relay (sometimes also called the Omega relay) is located in the Omega system and is what you use to initialize the Suicide Mission. It is notably different in that its lights are an ominous red colour instead of the standard blue.

The Mu relay is what Shepard used in "Mass Effect" to travel to Ilos (using the Mu relay is the point of no return in "Mass Effect") during his/her pursuit of Saren.

The Conduit was a miniature Mass Relay built by the Protheans on Ilos (the only one not built by the Reapers), that acted as a backdoor onto the Citadel. Saren used this to bypass the Citadel fleet and seize control of the Citadel, a mass relay itself, so he could give control to Soverign, who would in turn would have allowed a fleet of Reapers to flow into the Milky Way.

The Charon relay is named such because, according to the Codex, Charon (Pluto's moon) is actually a mass relay covered in an ice ball. Once humanity extracted the relay, it was humanity's gateway to the rest of the galaxy. They found that it led to the Arcturus system, which was a hub with many relays. When humanity formed the Systems Alliance, it's headquarters was eventually placed at Arcturus Station, from where it could quickly respond to its colonies.
