Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these characters dies in the prologue of the game?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah is Joel's twelve year old daughter who dies the on the night of the major outbreak. Although Joel does everything to save her from the hordes of infected, she is shot by a soldier guarding the path out of town. She dies in her father's arms.
2. After completing the prologue, how many years have passed since the start of the outbreak?

Answer: Twenty

Twenty years have passed since that fateful night. Joel is living in the Boston quarantine zone smuggling illegal weapons and medicine in exchange for ration cards (the new form of currency). His smuggling partner is a woman named Tess.
3. What is the motto of the Fireflies?

Answer: Look for the Light

"When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light". This line is said by Marlene, head of the Fireflies, during the opening credits. The Fireflies are a militia group who want to do away with martial law and reinstate democracy. Throughout the game, there are many places were the Fireflies have painted the words: "Look for the Light".
4. Joel and Tess make a deal with Marlene to smuggle a girl named Ellie out of the Boston quarantine zone. What is the picture on her shirt? (Note: this is still summer so she is not wearing her fall, winter, or spring outfit)

Answer: Sun and palms

Every season, Ellie has a different outfit. In summer, she wears a short sleeve red shirt with a large yellow sun, blue waves, black palm trees, and two seagulls. She also wears a long sleeve black shirt underneath the t-shirt, blue jeans, black converses, and a small backpack.
5. To get to the Capitol Building, the group goes outside the quarantine zone and deep into the abandoned section of Boston. Out there, one of the tallest buildings is buckling and leaning dangerously against another building. How was it so badly damaged?

Answer: Military bomb raid

The military left leaflets informing the Boston residence of planned bomb raids in order to kill off as many infected in the Boston area as possible. Tess told this to Ellie while approaching said leaning building. According to Tess, the bombs worked and kept the infected away from Boston for a while.

However, the rest of Boston was torn up from the raids. The streets had collapsed into the sewers/subway tunnels and buildings were knocked down, thus making it more difficult for Joel, Ellie, and Tess to reach the Capitol Building.
6. What new firearm does Joel find inside the leaning building?

Answer: Revolver

There are several opportunities for Joel to get the revolver in the leaning building. If, for whatever reason, the player does not pick up the firearm, there are more chances later in the game. However, this is the point in the game when Joel can begin equipping another gun.

The revolver is more of a pain to load than the pistol, but it does more damage to enemies. The other three weapons can be found in the game but at a later time.
7. After clearing the leaning building, Joel, Ellie, and Tess run into another building to get away from a large group of infected. What is this building?

Answer: An American history museum

The three of them rush into the loading/basement area of an American history museum. The museum is in an old building and, without constant upkeep, is falling apart. Fortunately, a lot of the historical pieces are still intact. Ellie finds them fascinating and looks around at the artifacts.
8. What are the last words that Tess says to Joel (without the profanity)?

Answer: "Just go"

Back at the museum, Tess is bitten by a runner. Within an hour, they make it to the Capitol building and the fungus is already spreading. After realizing what is happening to Tess, they find themselves surrounded by military. Tess tells Joel that she'd rather die and buy them time to escape than turn into a monster and that Joel should let her go so that her death will be easier for her.

However, the last words she says to Joel after she shoves him towards the back entrance are (without the swearing) "Just go".
9. What finally convinces Joel that Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps Brain Infection (CBI)?

Answer: She breathed in the spores

To escape the military turret, Joel and Ellie run into the flooded subway tunnels. However, dark, wet, underground places are prime habitats for the Cordyceps fungus to grow. The survivors can prevent infection via airborne spores by wearing gas masks (luckily the spores were so big that they were visible from several yards away). Joel wears his mask in the fungus/spore filled tunnels, but Ellie breathes them in without any effect.

He doesn't completely believe it previously, even when Tess had pointed out that, in one hour, the infection in her was worse than three weeks in Ellie.
10. How many Firefly pendants can be found up until this point (the Quarantine Zone and Outskirt chapters)?

Answer: 7

Three are in the Quarantine Zone (David Vigil, Ben Glueck, and Philip Lui) and four from the Outskirts (Joseph Lenz, Michael Kiper, Melinda Davidson, and Shiyao Jiang). All of these pendants were given to the Fireflies of the same name after they'd been initiated into their ranks.

There are used as proof of being a Firefly as well as a form of identification should they die in battle with the military, hunters, or infected. It is curious how so many of them ended up in trees or stuck high on telephone poles.
