Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Oh lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?' - Janis Joplin, 'Mercedes Benz' Which of these is NOT a type of sports utility vehicle manufactured by Mercedes-Benz?

Answer: GLB-Class

The GLA is the smallest of the choices, a subcompact car, while the GLC is a compact SUV and the GLE is mid-sized. The GL class also includes the larger GLS.

('Mercedes Benz' is from the album 'Pearl'.)
2. 'You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too, Mercury and Subaru.' - Blondie, 'Rapture' Which type of engine does Subaru most commonly use for its vehicles above 1500cc?

Answer: Boxer engine

Boxer engines, also known as flat engines, are internal combustion engines with horizontal cylinders arranged in two banks with a crankshaft in between. Each cylinder is controlled by a crankpin. It gets its name from the movement of the pistons, which resembles the fists of a boxer.

('Rapture' is from the album 'Autoamerican'.)
3. 'I got class like a '57 Cadillac, And overdrive with a whole lot of boom in the back.' - Rihanna, 'Shut Up & Drive' Cadillac was the first American car to win the UK Dewar Trophy, a prize awarded by the Royal Automobile Club every year for either a particularly excellent performance, or doing the most to advance the automobile industry. For what did it win the prize in 1908?

Answer: Parts interchangeability

Cadillac won its first Dewar Trophy in 1908, when three Model Ks were disassembled and had to be reassembled into working cars. The award for the electric lights was in 1912, and Coventry Climax Engines were the Grand Prix engine providers in 1963. Cadillac tailfins were not introduced until 1948, and reached their zenith in the late '50s (the model Rihanna was singing about presumably had them).

('Shut Up & Drive' is from the album 'Good Girl Gone Bad'.)
4. 'Little red Corvette, Baby, you're much too fast.' - Prince, 'Little Red Corvette' What type of car is the Corvette?

Answer: Sports car

The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car - the official sports car of the commonwealth of Kentucky - and is noted for its speed and performance. Also known as the Stingray, it was first manufactured in 1953. It is named after the corvette, a small warship.

('Little Red Corvette' is from the album '1999'.)
5. 'I've been driving in my car. It's not quite a Jaguar.' - Madness, 'Driving in my Car' With which other British automobile company did Jaguar merge in 2008?

Answer: Land Rover

Jaguar started out as a sidecar manufacturer, before branching out into cars. Land Rover, meanwhile, was known for its manufacturing of durable off-road vehicles. The two companies merged in 2008, established as a subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors, with Jaguar Cars becoming the luxury vehicle brand of Jaguar Land Rover.

('Driving in my Car' is from the album 'Utter Madness'.)
6. 'You make me laugh. Give me your autograph. Can I ride with you in your BMW?' - Oasis, 'Supersonic' What does BMW stand for?

Answer: Bavarian Motor Works

Or in the original German, 'Bayerische Motoren Werke'. BMW owns both Rolls Royce and Mini, and is based in Munich in Germany. It also manufactures motorcycles under the brand 'BMW Motorrad'. It also produced a series of 'art cars', where artists such as Ken Done and Roy Lichtenstein used BMW cars as canvases for painting.

('Supersonic' is from the album 'Definitely Maybe'.)
7. 'We finally sold the Chevy when we had another baby, And you took the job in Tennessee.' - Paula Cole, 'Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?' Which of these cars is NOT manufactured by Chevrolet?

Answer: Cascada

The Cascada is actually a Buick product. The Impala is a full-size car which was originally known for its triple taillights; the Camaro is a pony car, created as a competitor for the Ford Mustang; and the Volt is a hybrid car, with similar variants made by other companies, such as the Buick Velita and the Opel Ampera. Another famous car manufactured by Chevrolet is the Corvette, as sung about by Prince.

('Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?' is from the album 'This Fire'.)
8. 'Rover was killed by a Pontiac, and it was done with such grace and artistry that the witnesses awarded the driver both ears and the tail. But I digress.' - Tom Lehrer, 'In Old Mexico' When did Pontiac cease manufacturing cars?

Answer: 2010

Named after the Michigan town in which it was founded, Pontiac was phased out by its parent company General Motors, along with Oldsmobile. Its original logo was a Native American headdress, as a reference to the Ottawa chief after whom the city was named, which was later replaced by an arrowhead. For financial reasons, General Motors dropped the Pontiac brand, amongst others, in the hope of getting a $25 billion loan from Congress. The final Pontiac to be manufactured was a white four-door sedan, built in 2010.

('In Old Mexico' is from the album 'An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer'.)
9. 'Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill, But she'll walk a Thunderbird like she's standing still.' - The Beach Boys, 'Little Deuce Coupe' What type of car was the 'deuce coupe'? (You don't need to be a Beach Boys fan to know this one - it was a term used by hot rod fans.)

Answer: 1932 Ford Model B

To be a deuce, a coupe must have either 3 or 5 windows. The 'flathead mill' refers to the flathead Ford V8 engine, although the model on the cover of the Beach Boys' album had a customised Oldsmobile V8. Both this engine and the price of the deuce coupe made it popular with young male hot rod enthusiasts. ('Rod' is supposedly a reference to the engine's camshaft, which would often be upgraded for speed.)

('Little Deuce Coupe' is from the album of the same name.)
10. 'Where's the Czar of all the Russias? Down the drain. And the five-cent candy bar? And the good old Edsel car?' - Allan Sherman, 'Down the Drain' The Edsel was not one of Ford's better ideas. Named after Henry Ford's son, it was only in production for 3 years. What was its main distinguishing design feature?

Answer: A grille shaped like a horse collar

The 'horse collar' grille received much derision from critics and was compared to both a vagina and an 'Oldsmobile sucking a lemon'. It was originally supposed to be shaped like a ring, but Ford's assistant Ernest Breech wanted a taller, wider grille, and the 'horse collar' was the result. Many 1958 models were faulty and contained parts from other cars, such as Mercurys. The timing of the car's release was also bad, due to the economic recession of 1957.

('Down the Drain' is from the album 'Togetherness.')
