1. Under what name was Emporia State University founded?

Answer: Kansas State Normal School

In 1863, just two years after Kansas became a state, Kansas State Normal School was founded in Emporia. The doors opened in 1865. According to legend, President Lyman Beecher Kellogg entered the building carrying only a Bible and a dictionary. A Normal School is a school dedicated to the education of teachers.

In 1874 a plague of grasshoppers hit Kansas State Normal School, causing it to decrease faculty salaries (which were already low) by 18%. In 1878, KSN was hit by a tornado which destroyed a great deal of the campus; including the "main" building. Later that year a fire damaged the administration building. Enrollment did drop to 90 students in that year.

ESU was founded as Kansas State Normal School in 1863. In 1923, its name was changed to Kansas State Teachers College. In 1974 the name was changed to Emporia Kansas State College and finally in 1977 the name was changed to Emporia State University.

Emporia State University charges by hour for tuition up to 12 credit hours. Every hour after 12 in a semester is free. If the student is able to take 18 credit hours a semester, the savings can really add up!
5. What is the mascot of Emporia State University?

Answer: Hornet

Emporia State's mascot is the Hornet. The actual dressed up mascot which performs at games is named Corky the Hornet. There is a statue of the official Corky "look" in front of Plumb Hall. Corky is a large hornet with a smiling face and a black sweater with a "power e" on it. The "power e" is the logo of ESU, and is a very wide E which is black with a gold border.

Answer: Black and Gold

The official colors of Emporia State University are Black and Gold. The typical school function uses a bright gold color, but the football team uses a deep gold almost the color of Notre Dame's football uniforms.

The Bonner & Bonner Diversity Lecture Series began in 1992 in honor of Drs. Thomas and Mary Bonner who both served as faculty members at the university, and were the first African American faculty members. They served the school for a combined 48 years.

Kansas State Normal School (KSN) was founded in 1863. In 1902, the western branch of KSN was opened in Hays, Kansas and in 1903 the Manual Training Auxiliary School was opened in Pittsburg, Kansas. The Manual Training Auxiliary School was a branch of KSN. KSN became Emporia State University, the branch in Hays became Fort Hays State University and the Manual Training Auxiliary School became Pittsburg State University.

In arguably the biggest win in ESU men's basketball history, ESU, then Kansas State Teachers College, beat the Kansas Jayhawks and legendary coach Phog Allen in Lawrence, KS. The Hornets would go on to lose 82-66 to Louisville in the second round of the NAIA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament that year while the Jayhawks finished 12-12 but would win the National Championship four years later in 1952.
