Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Located north of Little Rock, Arkansas, what town is the home of Harding University?

Answer: Searcy

Searcy is nestled gently near the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. It rose to prominence in the past because it is roughly a days ride (by horseback) north of Little Rock. Searcy is also the home to one of the satellite campuses of Arkansas State University -Beebe.
2. With what religious organization does Harding share an affiliation?

Answer: Church of Christ

While members of other organized religious denominations are welcome at Harding University, the majority of its student and faculty population are members of the non-denominational group the Church of Christ. Other schools that share an affiliation with the Church of Christ are Pepperdine University, Abilene Christian University, and Lipscomb University.
3. What EX-endangered species is the mascot of Harding University?

Answer: Bison

These noble creatures have sparked up many a debate on the Harding campus. The true plural form of the word "bison" is "bison". However, seen in many publications and heard around campus, the word "bisons" has crept into the vocabulary.
4. Harding competes in intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division-II level.

Answer: True

They are members of the Gulf South Conference. Harding can even boast that one of its former students is a Super Bowl champion. Lineback Tank Daniels of the New York Giants has become a champion by helping his team beat the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Way to go Tank!
5. Which Russian leader gave a speech at Harding University as a part of the distinguished lecturer program?

Answer: Mikhail Gorbachev

The Distinguished Lecturer Program brings in notable speakers from all walks of life. From world leaders such as Gorbachev, to actors/commentators like Ben Stein, you are sure to have an experience you won't soon forget. As a side note, I was lucky enough to actually meet Mr. Gorbachev and I found it quite difficult not to stare at his birthmark.
6. Every year, during Easter weekend, Harding University holds a competition that showcases the talents of its students. What is the name of this annual competition?

Answer: Spring Sing

Spring Sing is a Harding tradition that falls on Easter weekend. Each year, an overall concept is chosen, such as comedy or animation. Each participating club (Harding does not have fraternities and sororities) develops music and dance routines for the show. Each club act is judged according to their music, choreography, costumes, originality, participation, and Christian attitude.

The winning club is awarded money. The clubs then donate this money to the charity they have teamed up with. I participated in Spring Sing all my years at Harding and I can say it is one of the reasons I have such strong bonds of CAMARADERIE with a lot of the people I knew when I was a student.
7. What are the official school colors of Harding University?

Answer: Black and gold

With colors like this you might expect the mascot to be the bumblebee. Purdue and University of Colorado at Boulder also use the black and gold colors. And interestingly enough, the University of Colorado mascot is also the bison.
8. In which of the following countries does Harding University NOT have a campus?

Answer: Germany

In addition to its main campus in Searcy, Arkansas, Harding University gives students the opportunity to study abroad. Harding has campuses in Italy, Greece, England, Australia, Chile, France/Switzerland, and Zambia. Being a HUF (Harding University in Florence, Italy) alumni, I always recommend that one first.

But I urge anyone with the desire to travel to consider any of these programs.
9. According to Harding tradition, what structure should you NOT walk under alone?

Answer: The bell tower

According to Harding legend, if you walk under the bell tower alone, you will never get married. Another superstition is if you sit on a Harding swing with the same person of the opposite sex three times, then you two are destined for the altar. I am happy to report that both of these legends are false.
10. What nickname is given to the world class Harding University Marching Band?

Answer: The Thundering Herd

The ringing of the cowbell and the movements of the rain dance are still with me. Although I am sad to say I never knew our fight song actually has words.
