Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. J. Paul Getty (1892-1976) was born into one of the wealthiest families in the world. What was his first name?

Answer: Jean (Sometimes it would be written as Eugene)

Jean Paul Getty was the son of a wealthy industrialist and the founder of Getty Oil. He was one of the first Americans who could accurately call himself a 'billionaire.'
2. The Getty Villa, located in Malibu, California, was Getty's main home. Soon realizing that his expanding art collection needed additional space, he built the original J. Paul Getty Museum in 1968. It was a re-creation of the Villa dei Papiri, a Roman country house located in _____________.

Answer: Herculaneum

When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, the Villa dei Papiri (Villa of Papyrus) was buried in volcanic ash. Getty had an opportunity to visit the area while it was still being excavated and fell in love with the design of the houses. However, since much of the Villa dei Papiri had yet to be uncovered, many of the Villa's architectural elements are based on the design of a number of Roman villas.
3. The Getty Villa houses one of the finest collections of which three styles of sculpture?

Answer: Greek, Etruscan, Roman

Getty's love of ancient sculptures from the Mediterranean areas led him to collect statues, vases, paintings, and fountains representative of the three major civilizations that flourished there.
4. Oinochoe, leykthos, pelike, and volute krater are all types of ______________.

Answer: Vases

The Getty Villa contains one of the most complete collections of ancient vases anywhere in the world. Artists often used vases to depict stories and legends, including representations of the Trojan War, various gods and goddesses, as well as gold and bejeweled royal vessels used by kings and emperors.
5. Which of these statements is true about the Getty Center, the museum and educational complex built in Brentwood, California?

Answer: The former Director of Antiquities, Marion Blue, has been accused of trafficking in stolen art objects

In 2005, the Italian government indicted Marion Blue for participating in a scheme to loot hundreds of pieces of ancient art works. In her defense, she stated that she was only following practices that were "known, approved, and condoned by the Getty's Board of Directors." In 2006, the Getty returned 26 disputed objects of art to Italy.
6. From May 1, 2007 to September 2, 2007, the Getty's main exhibition was a series of animal paintings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, one of the finest painters of animals of the eighteenth century. One of his paintings is of a giant animal known as 'Clara' who toured Europe during the 1740s and 1750s, often performing for the crowned heads of Europe. What was 'Clara'?

Answer: Rhinoceros

In 1741, Clara was brought from India to the Netherlands and immediately became one of the most popular attractions of her time. For seventeen years, she toured much of Europe and it was the Germans who gave her the name 'Miss Clara' because of her gentle nature. Clara inspired everything from commemorative coins to hairstyles throughout the continent.
7. In 1987, J. Paul Getty (1932-2003), Getty's son, received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, but since he was an American citizen, he could not use the title 'Sir' What did he do to overcome this problem?

Answer: In 1997, he renounced his American citizenship and became a British subject

A number of factors led to Getty's renunciation of his American citizenship. His father had continuously labeled him a failure despite his growing reputation in the art world. In 1973, his grandson, John Paul Getty III, was kidnapped and the family turned to Jean Paul to pay the ransom.

When he did not respond in time, the kidnappers send another demand, but this request was delayed by an Italian postal strike. Finally, when one of the boy's ears was offered as proof of his predicament, the ransom was paid. Jean Paul no longer felt safe in the United States and moved to a magnificent Tudor estate near Guildford.

The Queen was said to have remarked "Now you can use your title. How nice."
8. A very popular souvenir of both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center is a special kind of postcard. What is this postcard called?

Answer: Lenticular

Lenticular postcards (also called auto stereograms) show a changing series of pictures on one card; tilt the card a different angles and the scene will change. It's really a remarkable item to look at, and the Getty offers two types of Lenticular cards.
9. Although the idea received serious consideration, the Getty Foundation decided not to build a health spa on the grounds of the Getty Villa.

Answer: True

They felt that the name 'Spa Getty' was just a bit too much. Just joking...the chance to use this horrible pun was too good to pass up.
10. On a clear day in Los Angeles (yes, it does have them!), a visitor to the Getty Center could see the following scenes:

Answer: Snow on the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Catalina Island off in the distance

The view from the Getty on a clear day is incredible. The entire Los Angeles Basin, including the downtown area, UCLA, and most of Beverly Hills is clearly visible. Even though many people don't use 'snow' and 'Los Angeles' in the same sentence, there are days when the nearby San Gabriels receive a considerable dusting of snow. And "twenty-six miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me." The three incorrect areas are either on the other side of the mountains or just too far away to see.
