Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Located in the Limpopo region of South Africa, which of the following is an actual bar?

Answer: A baobab tree bar

In the furthest northern region of South Africa, there is a 6,000 year old baobab tree. Inside this tree you can get a cocktail while escaping from the suffocating heat of the Limpopo province. For decades and possibly centuries, this tree was known only to the local Bushmen, but has now become a popular stop for local tourists.

While not a big bar, it does have benches and even a dart board.
2. The Cova d'en Xoroi was found on the Spanish island of Minorca, which is part of which of the following options?

Answer: Balearic Islands

The Cova d'en Xoroi was simply a disco bar in a cave, gazing at the sea. It was known for its sheer beauty in sound. It was a beautiful location where one can view the dawn, the sunset and the spell of the moon. This location is found on the island of Minorca in the Mediterranean Sea.

This island belongs to the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain. A common drink to order at this location is a pomade, which is a mix of gin, lemon juice, and sugar.
3. Tokyo, Japan, is known for having many unusual bars and restaurants including which of the following options?

Answer: Alcatraz ER

Alcatraz ER is just one of the many places you could visit at night when visiting Tokyo. You will be seated inside a real prison cell at your table. The location has a somewhat ominous feeling to it and if you are there around ten in the evening you are going to be subjected to an escaped monster running around the place at the same time all the lights go out!
4. The very first bar to be made entirely of ice can be found in which of the following countries?

Answer: Sweden

Known as the Ice Hotel, inside of this unique building in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden is the Absolut Bar, which derives its name from the Absolut Vodka company. Guests huddle together in the freezing conditions surrounded by ice sculptures, drinking vodka cocktails from ice glasses.

The water used to make all this beautiful ice comes from the Torne River, and the bar is only open during the winter from December to April.
5. When I went to the "Dans le Noir" restaurant in Paris, France, what did I notice about all of the waiting staff?

Answer: They were blind

"Dans Le Noir" is a bar and restaurant chain that first opened in Paris in 2004. The diner enjoys his meal completely without light. All of the waiter staff are blind or have seriously limited vision. When you dine or drink here you have very little knowledge of what you will be eating or drinking although you can be somewhat sure that it will be French.

A percentage of the profits are regularly donated to charity.
6. The Red Sea Star was the world's first underwater bar and restaurant.

Answer: True

Built in 1998, off the coast of Eliat, Israel, The Red Sea Star became the world's first underwater restaurant and bar. It was constructed 20 feet down in an area that had become very polluted due to human activity. During the four-year planning process, a coral nursery was started to help clean up the area and revive the underwater life that had once been present.

The finished building took another four years to build and it had a marine-themed interior. It is surrounded by a plethora of large windows which allows the diners to watch outside while they eat or drink.
7. 'The Clinic' was an unusual bar in which of the following countries that is based on a hospital theme?

Answer: Singapore

This bar in Singapore is one that you will either love or hate. The architect of the bar was Clarke Quay who is known for some strange artwork, such as a cow in formaldehyde. The bar consists of small pill-shaped rooms which are all interlinked. The guest can drink from a test tube or an IV bag. They can sit in a wheelchair or lay in a hospital bed instead of sitting on a bar stool.
8. Guacara Taina is an underground discotheque bar that was very popular in which of the following island nations?

Answer: Dominican Republic

If you like to dance and party all night long, this might just be the place for you. This huge underground cavern has numerous levels with music in all of them. It is probably the only place in the Dominican Republic where you can do these things for any great length of time without sweating. Like most caves it has a steady temperature of about 72 degrees all year around.
9. Eternity, "the coffin bar", is a bar erected in the center of an Edmonton, Canada cemetery.

Answer: False

The Eternity bar was given this name by its founders. It is shaped like a giant coffin and is located in Truskavets (Ukraine). It is approximately twenty meters long and six meters wide. Inside are coffins and funeral flowers placed all over. The expression "drink yourself to death" never made more sense than it does when drinking at this bar.
10. What is the alternate name for the H.R. Giger bar?

Answer: The Skeleton Bar

The H.R. Giger bar, also known as the Skeleton Bar is an odd combination of a museum and a bar. It was designed by Swiss movie engineer Hans Rudi Giger who was a designer on the "Alien" movies and won an Oscar for best special effects in 1980. This bar in Gruyere, Switzerland, will remind you of a skeletal alien.

The bar is decorated with skeleton bones throughout, from the walls and chairs to the flower vases.
