Answer: 1979, by the invasion of Vietnamese troops

Pol Pot's reign lasted for four years, and cost the lives of 2 million Cambodians, i.e. roughly a quarter of the then total population of 8 million.

Answer: True

Of a total population of 225 million people, almost 90 percent are Muslims. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, after China, India and the United States.

The military retook power, however, and continues to reign through the State Law and Order Resurrection Council (SLORC), later renamed State Peace and Development Council (SPDC). Aung San Suu Kyi lives in Myanmar, closely watched by the military, who put her under house arrest from time to time.

Corazon Aquino was president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992. She succeeded dictator Ferdinand Marcos three years after her husband Benigno Aquino, Marcos' rival, had been assassinated upon their return from exile.

Answer: Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles

Raffles (1781-1826) founded the modern city of Singapore in 1819. A fluent speaker of Malay, he had before held the positions of Malay translator to the Government of India, Lieutenant Governor of Java and Governor of Sumatra.

King Bhumipol of the Chakri dynasty succeeded to the throne of Thailand on June 9th, 1946, i.e. seven years before Queen Elizabeth II. Born in 1927 in Massachusetts, U.S.A., as of 2003 he was 76 years of age, 57 of which were spent as king.
