Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In China's Hunan Province, which National Park has 999 steps which visitors can climb to the Heaven's Gate Cave?

Answer: Tianmen Mountain National Park

The cave is also referred to as the Gateway to Heaven. Fortunately visitors also have the option of taking escalators up to the cave. On the mountain top is the Buddhist Tianmen Temple. There are paths built onto the side of the mountain which include a Glass Sky Walk.

Visitors can also travel to the top of the mountain by bus on the Tongtain Highway of 99 curves or by Tianmen Shan Cable Car.
2. In arid portions of India, stepwells were built to provide a dependable water source. Which of these, located in Abhaneri, Rajasthan, India, is thought to be the biggest with 3,500 symmetrical steps?

Answer: Chand Baori

Stepwells generally were wider at the top and narrowed to a pool of water. This design would capture rainfall during the monsoon. In many of the stepwells the temperature toward the bottom is several degrees cooler than at the top, and folk would congregate there in the cooler air.

Chand Baori was built in the tenth century by King Chanda. Three sides have geometrically symmetrical steps which descend over 13 stories. The fourth side has a temple dedicated to Harshat Mata, goddess of happiness and joy.
3. Built in the 1800s for access between the city and the harbor, this stairway was originally 200 steps. What new name was given to this stairway in Odessa, Ukraine, after the Soviet Revolution in 1955?

Answer: Potemkin Stairs

The stairs were renamed as a remembrance of the mutiny on the Battleship Potemkin. These stairs were designed to provide several optical illusions. From the bottom, one can only see the stairs, but from the top only the landings can be seen. In addition the stairway appears longer because the bottom stairs are 21.7 meters (70.8 feet) wide and the top stair is 12.5 meters (41 feet) wide.
4. In a quiet San Francisco, California neighborhood, this mosaic staircase was designed to visually rise from the sea to the sun. With a name taken from one of the streets it connects, how is the staircase known?

Answer: 16th Avenue Staircase

In a community effort, workshops were held to build the tile panels (only seen on the riser portion of the stairs) and the 163 stairs were completed and opened in 2005. The stairway continues to be maintained by volunteer efforts and donations.

A second stairway called the Hidden Garden Steps (148 steps) was designed by the same artists and opened in 2013.
5. In Rome, Italy, many visitors and locals spend time on these steps. Rising from the Piazza di Spagna to Piazza Trinità dei Monti, which of these steps ascends in front of the Fontana della Barcaccia to the Trinità dei Monti church?

Answer: Spanish Steps

These 138 steps were built in the 18th century and have become both a local meeting place and a popular tourist attraction. The Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Ugly Boat) was built in the 17th century.

The steps were designed by Italian architect Francesco de Sanctis to connect the plaza which hosted the Spanish embassy with the church which was under French patronage. Though funded by a French diplomat, the stairs were named for the plaza where they begin, Piazza di Spagna.
6. This may look like a roller coaster, but in fact, it's a mostly walkable stairway. Built in Duisburg, Germany, can you identify the name of this sculpture designed by Ulrich Genth and Heike Mutter?

Answer: Tiger & Turtle - Magic Mountain

The empty hill, left over from local mining, was the site chosen for this sculpture. The structure is 69 feet (21 meters) high. Stair climbers can view the country side from most of the structure, but the loop-the-loop is barricaded (though the stairs are still there). LED lights on the 249-step structure provide the opportunity for walkers to enjoy the climb after dark as well.
7. At Portrack House in Scotland, the private home of architect Charles Jencks, what started as a swimming hole became a 30 acre (12 hectare) garden. The garden explores many scientific themes. What name was given to the pictured staircase that descends through the years of universal evolution?

Answer: The Universe Cascade

These undulating stairs have spaces on each side with sculptural displays. The staircase descends into the water. There are approximately 40 displays throughout the The Garden of Cosmic Speculation.

Though the private garden is rarely opened to visitors, when it does open, all proceeds go to Maggie's Cancer Care Centres. Jencks co-founded this charity with his wife, Maggie Keswick, when they found that she was ill with cancer.
8. Located in Liege, Belgium, which of these staircases was originally built to provide soldiers a path from the citadel to the city center?

Answer: Montagne de Bueren

Built in 1881, this incredible staircase has a slope of about 30 degrees. Perhaps the very steep climb is why it is called "Mountain". Many visitors make the climb of the 374 stairs for the incredible views of the city and the Meuse River, or the ruins of the citadel.

For a special treat, visitors at the right time of year can see the steps illuminated by candles, or decorated with flowers.
9. Built by the Mayans in the Mexican state of Yucatán, this structure is in the center of Chichen Itza site. Can you identify this from the list below?

Answer: El Castillo

Tourists are no longer allowed to climb these stairs to the Temple on the platform, but can only marvel from below. With 91 steps on each side and the step to the platform, there are 365 steps on this pyramid (equal to the number of days in their Haab' calendar). Archaeologists believe this to be a burial site, and have found human remains and other objects inside the pyramid.
10. This entrance, referred to as the Lion Gate or Lion's Paws leads to the last of the stairs to take visitors to the top of rock plateau that is about 660 feet (200 meters) high. Which of the following Sri Lankan sites was also designated as a World Heritage Site?

Answer: Sigiriya

Though the site had long been a Buddhist monastery, legend has it that Kashyapa seized the throne from his half-brother and moved the capital to the top of this rock, building his own palace. When his brother reclaimed the throne, the capital was returned to Anuradhapura and the rock plateau returned to a monastery.

It was abandoned in the 13th or 14th century, and it wasn't until around 1982 that the Government of Sri Lanka began earnest archaeological study of the site.

There are an incredible 1250 steps to ascend to the highest point.
