Answer: Eleven General orders for Sentries

If a recruit failed to respond when ordered by a superior to "recite" (rapidly and loudly) any General Order, he would have the experience of being chewed out by a true professional. They were also good things to know when standing watch.

2. Naval personnel have different levels of pay as they are promoted. Which was the highest enlisted pay grade?

Answer: E-9

In 1968, the pay for a recruit was $94.50 per month. I'm glad to know it has increased!

3. By what term were pay grades also known?

Answer: Rates

You wouldn't get rich, but you might as well have known how to refer to your pay scale.

4. The personnel in which of these jobs was most likely to practice Marlinspike Seamanship?

Answer: Boatswain's Mate

Boatswains, or Bo'suns, are what most people think of as traditional sailors. They scrape paint, tie ropes, and handle small boats, among other essential jobs.

Answer: False

Women weren't required to get the haircuts. They now also have access to a lot of jobs into which they were not allowed in the 60s, which is an excellent thing.

Answer: True

Most Naval personnel refer to a rating by the colloquial contraction "rate," but a rate is only a pay grade.

Answer: All of these

As a former helo crewman, I'm biased, but I think helicopters are the most versatile aircraft type. "Holy Helo" -- toting the chaplain -- was always fun, as we had to operate near enough to pick him up after the service, so the ship would usually send up box lunches on the hoist with which we'd lowered him.

A "bend" is a knot used to join 2 lines (ropes, to the non-nautical). Halliard is usually spelled "halyard" now, but I'm going for tradition.
