In 1836 Santa Anna marched north in an attempt to bring Texas back under Mexican control.

After his failure in Texas, Santa Anna finally returned to Mexico during the Mexican-American war of 1846, but again failed to defeat the Americans. In 1869 Santa Anna tried to raise an army to take over Mexico City; this attempt also failed and he did not finally return to Mexico until 1874 under a general amnesty. In September 1940 he was again promoted, this time to the rank of Vice Admiral. During 1942 and the early part of 1943 Donitz's submarine tactic of 'rudel' (the use of the 'wolf-pack') was very successful against Allied shipping. January 1943 saw Donitz became Commander-In-Chief of the German navy and promotion to Grand Admiral. At the Nuremburg war crimes trials, Donitz was found guilty for his part in the Nazi war crimes and served 10 years in prison.

He died of a heart attack December 24 1980 in Aumuhle, Germany.
