What does the suffix "-gate" mean in English place names?

However, in road names it can mean 'gate'. If it's Northgate etc, it is gate. If it's Bradshawgate, it's road. (If it's in the centre of somewhere that has (Chester) or had walls, -gate is likely to be gate. If it's somewhere rural or only known to be populated by more than a couple of hundred after the Industrial Revolution, it'll be road. Confused? So am I...
