    Both of those are two-syllable words, with the last syllable being a diphthong.

    I pronounce those words with three syllables:

    AIR-ee-uh

    eye-DEE-uh (Substandard pronunciation: eye-DEER)

    Another one is oleo:
    OH-lee-oh

    Area is three - idea can be either. I tend to use eye-dee-a, but often hear eye-deer. (I try to avoid the schwa an words ending with a - just being awkward, I suppose.)

    Where I come from, a schwa is not treated as a syllable.
