Surprisingly, people will usually associate "Entrance of the Gladiators" with a circus and more specifically the entrance of clowns! Probably not at all what Julius Fucik had in mind! Fucik wrote the piece as a military march.
In 1901, American publisher Carl Fischer published a version of this march, arranged for American wind bands by Canadian composer Louis-Philippe Laurendeau, under the title "Thunder and Blazes".[3] It was during this period that the piece gained lasting popularity as a screamer march[4] for circuses, often used to introduce clowns.[5] Today it is mainly known by this association. Laurendeau's version was also transcribed for fairground organs.

Near the beginning of the 20th century, "Entrance of the Gladiators" became a popular musical piece in circuses to introduce clowns. This type of introductory music at circuses is known as a 'screamer march'. The original "Entrance of the Gladiators" was composed in 1897 by Fucik and in 1901 it was modified by the Canadian composer Louis-Philippe Laurendeau. Laurendeau's version was the one that gained popularity in circuses.
