Saint Catherine's Monastery Library in Sinai, Egypt, is the oldest continually operating library in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was established between 548 and 565 CE.

The al-Qarawiyyin Library takes second place. It is part of a university in Morocco, founded by Fatima al-Fihri at the Mosque and University of the same name. Located in Fez, Morocco, this library complex was established in 859 CE.
