How did bottle or can openers come to be called "church keys" (or "churchkeys")?

In 1811 food first started getting canned. Eighty years later the "church keys" were invented to open these cans as an improvement over a sharp knife. They were called church keys because they had a shape very similar to a large key used to open a church. There is a great comparative picture of the church key for opening a can next to a church key for opening a church in the Wikipedia article.
