Kansas was admitted to the Union as the 34th state in January 1861, a few months before war broke out. West Virginia was admitted in 1863 and Nevada in 1864. So there were 34 states at the beginning of the war and 36 at the end. Apr 19 03, 7:53 PM

Technically... Any of the Confederate States were no longer States during the War. The Union had to fight to regain control of the Confederacy (Confederate States of America).
