In "Scent of a Woman" how did Al Pacino's character become blind?

    Question #37440. Asked by Ilona_Ritter.

    HIPPIE- POWER

I think during a training he, as an instructor, blinded himself by misusing a grenade. His embarassment over this is brought out when one of his unkind relatives chides him during the Thanksgiving meal...Certainly one of his best roles.

Pacino is unbelievable in this excellent film. So far out of the usual characters he portrays. A childish prank while in the Army, blinded him, not only damaging his sight, but also, his emotions.
