According to the paper today this is the reason: For his first singing engagement in a Memphis church, he wanted to look smart, so he wore black, simply because he knew where to buy cheap black shirts for two pounds each. Black became his signature. He wore it next at the Grand Ol' Opry in Nashville, the home of Country music, when everyone else was wearing rhinestones. For the sick and lonely, in mournin' for the lives that could have been. For the thousands who have died, believen' that the Lord was on their side.
