What was the name of the first seven foot tall basketball player and what team did he play for?

Question #8462. Asked by Bridget. (Dec 06 00 12:28 AM)

    JReid

Bridget, that's an interesting question. Wilt 'The Stilt' Chamberlain came out of high school in Philadelphia in the mid-50's, attended the University of Kansas, and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76er's for their 1959 team. He was 7-1. He once scored 100 points in an NBA game. It's certainly possible that he wasn't the first man over 7 feet tall to attempt the game of basketball, but he was the first of that stature to play it well.

Elmore Morgenthaler was listed as 6'-9" in basketball-reference.com. Ralph Siewert at 7'-1" was the first 7-footer who played in the NBA from 1946-1947.
