International Basketball Federation In the winter of 1891-92 a Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith (1861-1939) invented the sport of basketball, to provide indoor exercise and competition for his students between the end of the football season and the start of the baseball season. He was an instructor at the YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1959 he was voted to the Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield (its official name is the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame).
