Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these NBA teams did not use green as one of its primary uniform colors?

Answer: Los Angeles Lakers

The Seattle Supersonics fielded the following team colors: forest green, burgundy, yellow and metallic bronze (they became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008). The Boston Celtics are practically synonymous with the shade of green they wear, which is commonly called 'Celtic Green'.

The Milwaukee Bucks sport the following colors: hunter green, purple and silver. The Lakers are well known for their team colors: royal purple and gold.
2. Which NBA player was involved in an infamous 'choking' incident during the 1997-98 NBA season?

Answer: Latrell Sprewell

On December 1, 1997, Latrell Sprewell and coach P.J. Carlesimo had a run-in during a Golden State Warriors practice. The confrontation apparently resulted in Sprewell wrapping his hands around Carlesimo's neck in a choking position. As a result of the incident, Sprewell was suspended for the rest of the NBA season (68 games) during which time he was traded to the New York Knicks. Carlesimo stuck around for another two years, but was finally fired by the Warriors during the 1989-90 season. His overall record with the team...46-113.
3. Which team won the first NBA Championship in 1949?

Answer: Minneapolis Lakers

The Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League combined in 1949, after the BAA had two championships beginning in 1947. The Lakers met the Eastern Conference Champion Washington Capitols for the first NBA Crown in 1949. The Lakers were victorious four games to two.
4. By the NBA draft of 2003 only one team had never had a lottery draft pick since the inception of the lottery in 1986. Which of these is that team?

Answer: Utah Jazz

In 1985 the Jazz had the 16th pick in the NBA draft and selected John Stockton with that pick. That was the last year in which the NBA failed to hold a draft lottery. For the next 18 years, the Jazz were fortunate to make the playoffs and hence were not eligible for the lottery (they also failed to trade for any picks that turned up in the lottery during that period).
5. In 1956, the season MVP was awarded for the first time. Which St. Louis Hawk star received that award?

Answer: Bob Pettit

The other greats listed never played for the Hawks, and had not reached their 10th birthday when Pettit received this award. In 1956, Bob was also the NBA scoring leader, and gave his Hawks 25.7 points per game. Pettit later received another MVP in 1959.
6. Which UCLA and Milwaukee Bucks star, came into the NBA as Lew Alcindor?

Answer: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Alcindor had been recruited by more than 200 colleges but selected John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins, where they won three consecutive crowns from 1967-1969. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1970 with the Bucks, and won his first championship there teaming up with the great Oscar Robertson. He went to the Lakers in 1975, and spent the rest of his career there until 1985.
7. Which of the following teams was the last team in the 20th century to win 4 consecutive NBA Championships?

Answer: Boston Celtics

Although all these teams won consecutive championships in the 20th century, the Celtics were the only team to win four, and amazingly, they won eight consecutive crowns from 1959-1966. Their total finals record in that period was 32 wins against only 14 losses.
8. Who recorded a record of 13-0 in the first thirteen games he coached during the 2003-04 NBA season?

Answer: Lawrence Frank

The 33-year old Lawrence Frank took over as interim coach of the New Jersey Nets after Byron Scott was fired in early 2004. Byron Scott had led the Nets to the NBA finals in the previous two seasons, but had begun the 2003-04 season with a lukewarm 22-20 record. Scott won the last game he coached, but was replaced by Frank following that game.

The Nets reeled off 13 wins in a row to welcome Frank into the fold!
9. Which NBA player played the lead role in Spike Lee's film "He Got Game" (1998)?

Answer: Ray Allen

Ray Allen portrayed high school phenom Jesus Shuttlesworth in the film, which co-starred Denzel Washington as his father Jake. The film also featured NBA stars Rick Fox, Travis Best, Walter McCarty and John Wallace. Heck, even Michael Jordan made a cameo appearance in the film as himself (along with several other NBA players and a dozen college coaches).
10. Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, Terrell Brandon and Shawn Kemp all took turns leading which team in scoring during the 1990s?

Answer: Cleveland Cavaliers

Mark Price led the Cavaliers in scoring in 89-90, 93-94, and 94-95 seasons. Brad Daugherty led the team in scoring during the 90-91, 91-92 and 92-93 seasons. Terrell Brandon led the team in points per game during the 95-96 and 96-97 seasons. Kemp led the team in scoring for the last three seasons of that decade.
