Subject: What's the difference?

Hi everyone

I've been a member of Funtrivia since 2006 and love the site, but admit I'm not massively active when it comes to chat boards, etc. I suppose one of the thing that puts me off is that I'm not a big fan of social media. I appreciate in this day and age social media can be pretty useful, I'm just a bit old fashioned. What I was wondering though, especially with Funtrivia, is what's the difference between the chat boards and the forums?

Thanks in advance

As best I can tell, the chat boards are more casual and have a wider variety of topics whereas the forums are the best place to report issues that you want to make sure Terry, the site owner/administrator sees so that he can fix them.

It's historical. The Forums existed before what we now call the "main" FunTrivia site. That was built up later, slowly, over a great deal of time. Eventually, more people were on the main site than the Discussion Forums and the decision was made to create the Boards on the FunTrivia site so that a separate login would not be required. There are some advantages to still having the Discussion Forums around, even though a separate login is required. The separate registration and login for the Discussion Forums means that the people that post there tend to be more experienced and more familiar with FT and its history than some who post only on the FT Boards. Many things "evolve" over time, including the badge/badgelet/ upgrade structure, because there was no "grand plan at the beginning". Lots of things were tried out. Some things worked, some didn't, and some of the things that worked were retained even though they might seem illogical to newer arrivals unaware of the history of how it developed.

To add to what brm50diboll said, when the site was first launched in the 1990s, it consisted of trivia facts and pieces of information that were put into a database. Then came questions and answers that were more like those you can currently find in AskFT - in other words, someone would pose a question and other people would answer it. You might also get a few snippets/factoids thrown in but what you wouldn't get were quizzes, at least, not in their current form - they were added later, followed by the games.

As it happens, bernie73 did a pretty good job of constructing a history of FT over in the Virtual Blogs. You can find it here:

It's a good read if you're interested in the trivia behind a trivia site that is always in a state of development. :)

A big part of the reason behind setting up the Chat Boards was that at the time, we had a pretty large contingent of young members. There was a certain amount of tension between them and the older Forum members - an older member would want to have a fairly in depth conversation about, say, film, and the kids would be going "Oooh, I looooove Josh Hartnett!" So the chats were set up to give everyone a place.

These days, the kids have for the most part moved on, and the ones who are here are more interested in playing and writing quizzes than in chatting - they do that elsewhere nowadays. So there's not a huge difference between the two, except for when it comes to reporting glitches and so on.
