Purpose of the History Blog

I am writing this blog with the assumption that it is a good idea to know how FunTrivia started and how it has evolved over the years. If you have gotten far enough into the site to read this (and even for some who haven’t), you have hopefully gotten some enjoyment out of this site over the months or years. Over the years, the passing of several prominent members of FunTrivia has emphasized to me that none of us will be part of this site forever. The longer we wait to record this data, the harder it will become. While a fair amount of information can be gleaned from various items on this and other sites, some of this information may only be in the memories of the members.
My proposal, beginning with my next post, is once a week to post an account about a topic related to FunTrivia based on what I have read on this site and others. At that point, I will sit back and let others comment. Hopefully, in some cases this will confirm that I have interpreted the information correctly. In other cases, there may be corrections about information I have interpreted incorrectly. In still other cases, there will be new details and information that I simply did not know about.
As to why do this, I am starting with the idea that it is just interesting to know what the site used to be like. Beyond that, however, I think there is value in knowing how it was done in the past. In the various chat boards and forums, there are periodic suggestions for changes to the site. Some of these changes may been suggested in the past or even used to be the way things worked. It can be helpful to see why your “new idea” was changed or rejected in the past. In some cases, the rationale may still make sense. In other cases, the situation may have changed and what was not feasible before may now be.
In the various accounts I will try to give some sense of where I gathered the information, though maybe not as formally as a history paper. It should be possible for you to go back and look at this evidence also if you wish. Much of what I’m presenting is on the site, but scattered over many locations. It is my hope that we can eventually have a record of the FunTrivia story in one place. I encourage you to comment and share your story of your FunTrivia with us as you are comfortable.

This is the first time that I have read this blog. As an administrator (of the forums) and a member since 1999 I can answer some questions.

When Terry created 'Quizzyland' chat boards it was before COPPA kicked in and some of our members were children under the age of 13, indeed the editor boyscout was about ten years old. The forums were more for adults, especially Controversial Issues and Current Events, I was a moderator in both, we began to actively discourage children from posting in the forums and sent them to the hardly used chat boards, hardly used as there were not too many quizzes. In fact we also send some of our more troublesome adult members to them too!

When the number of quizzes built up then people went to the chat boards rather than the forums, the number of forum posts reduced dramatically and the chat boards were no longer the 'naughty step'. :)

As for the two registrations, Terry writes the software for the main site, the forums use an off the shelf software package. There is some interaction which is why we insist on the same login name being used, but very little.

This is interesting. Sue, would you say from your perspective that most of the people who are active on the forums were active there for 15 or more years. Or are there a significant number of people who became active on the forums who came on board after the chat boards took off. For instance, I've posted on the forums a number of times but wouldn't consider myself an active user.

I'm an active oldie too...Class 5, June 2000, first quiz written that same month.

You should cover the invention of Teams too. I know Terry had a hand/membership in some of the oldest, including my own, the Quiz Makers Guild. I believe we traced it to being created at least around the 2004 range.

That would be an interesting topic. I haven't seen much information about it.

I remember at first we were allowed to be a member of two teams if we wanted. I started off, if I recall correctly, in the Jane Austen Lovers and the Canadians. Then after awhile (months? a year or so?) we had to pick just one team and I moved to the Guild which had been created by that time.

With the beginnings of Quiz adoptions, some of our oldest (and lowest rated) quizzes are being modified. This is including the quizzes that were adapted from the Weekly Quiz game of 1999-2000. I could understand why the ratings tended to be lower with all fill in the blank questions and usually not much interesting information. However, it is important to remember that they were created for a different purpose and really resembled your typical pub trivia quiz rather than a modern FunTrivia quiz. As such, I've included the best record I've seen showing what a typical set of questions for a typical Weekly Quiz would look like. From what I've been told, with the much more limited amount of online information in 1999-2000, people who played this game often would use a large part of the week to research the answer to these questions. I believe this is the Weekly Quiz question set for the week of either April 20 or April 27, 2000.

I can remember actually using books from my bookshelf to look up some of the answers to these, and even a deck of cards for the one about the King without a mustache! :) In fact, I've just looked at a deck of cards now. It truly did take all week to answer a set, while today it might take an hour or so.

Regarding your example from McGruff's quiz up there, the following is the resulting adoption: link https://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/General/Classic-Mixed-TriviaB-7.html

Jane Austen Lovers was one of the first teams? News to me - I joined it in 2005 and am currently the only active member.
