The Jewish Bible or Tanakh is also referred to as the Christian Old Testament. Different Jewish and Christian groups include various texts, but there is a lot of common material. The New Testament provides the basis for Christian belief that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah predicted in the Old Testament.

1. The Christian Bible, as we know it today, was written on three different continents. Can you name the three continents?

From Quiz
Fascinating Trivia About the Bible

Answer: Asia, Africa, Europe

The Christian Bible was written on three different continents -- Asia, Africa and Europe. With Israel being part of the Middle East, it only stands to reason a vast majority of the content of the Bible was penned in Asia. However, it must be remembered some passages of Jeremiah were written in Egypt, part of Africa, while Paul wrote a number of New Testament books when he was in Europe. (Source factretriever.com/bible-facts)

2. What sort of work did the prophet Amos do for a living?

From Quiz Bible Career Choices

Answer: he was a herdsman

Amos oversaw herds of sheep and goats. He may also have likely supplemented his meager income by selling wild figs or "sycamore figs". He was not a prophet in the traditional sense; not having undergone training or having been taught as a prophet, but he nonetheless proved to be accurate in his portrayal of the future fate of enslavement awaiting Israel at the hands of the Babylonians. Amos 1:1 says, "The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake." Amos 7:14 says, "Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit:"

3. A cold-blooded serpent tricked Eve in the Book of Genesis, but what type of cold-blooded creatures greatly distressed the Egyptians in the Book of Exodus?

From Quiz Biblical Beasts, Birds and Bugs

Answer: Frogs

According to the Book of Exodus (8:2-14), frogs were the second of ten plagues which were brought upon Egypt because of the Pharaoh's refusal to set the Hebrews free from bondage. Whilst the frogs were said to have covered the land of Egypt, they didn't really do much except get underfoot, although they did cause a mighty stench after they died. This is the only story of the Old Testament in which frogs play any role.

4. The letter 'A'. According to Genesis 41:45, what was the name of the daughter of Potipherah, priest of On, who became the wife of Joseph?

From Quiz 25 Women of the Bible -- 'A' through to 'Z'

Answer: Asenath

The correct answer is Asenath, but not much is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference. According to Genesis 46:20, she was the mother of Manasseh and Ephraim. At this time, Joseph was the second most powerful man in Egypt, surpassed by only the Pharaoh. As a result, Asenath would have been one of the most influential women in Egypt.

5. In the Garden of Eden there was a tree, the fruit of which was forbidden to Adam and Eve. How was this tree referred to in the Bible (King James Version)?

From Quiz Some Biblical Events

Answer: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

Many people think that it was an apple which Eve picked and shared with Adam but the Bible doesn't identify the tree or its fruit. (See Genesis, chapter 2, verse 17.)

6. Many people - even Christians! - are quite unfamiliar with the Protestant Old Testament. Which book would you find just before Nehemiah?

From Quiz Navigating the Bible

Answer: Ezra

Ezra and Nehemiah (which are one book in the 'Tanakh', the Hebrew Bible) both deal with the reconstruction of Jerusalem and the Temple after the Jews return from the Exile in Babylon. The three shorter books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther conclude the group of historical books which run from Joshua to Esther. The Wisdom literature comes next. 2 Chronicles is also historical, but comes earlier in the group. Job is the first book in the Wisdom literature group.

7. 1. I only have a few sentences written about me. They're in I Chronicles. 2. My prayer to God to stretch my boundaries has made me the subject of a few books for all ages. 3. My name means pain. Who am I?

From Quiz Guess the Bible Story from Three Clues!

Answer: Jabez

His prayer can be found in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. The books written about him are by Bruce Wilkinson and include "The Prayer of Jabez" and "Beyond Jabez" among others for teens and children.

8. English translations of the Bible were in existence before the advent of the King James Bible. On which Bible is the King James version mostly based?

From Quiz The King James Bible

Answer: The Bishop's Bible

The King James version was based on the Bishop's Bible which appeared in 1568. The King wanted to emphasise the status of ordained clergy within the new translation. The Bishop's Bible was popular among the clergy, but not the common people.

9. A dead man was thrown into a certain prophet's tomb, and after coming into contact with the bones of the dead prophet, sprang back to life himself. Which prophet's bones resurrected this man?

From Quiz Dead Men Walking

Answer: Elisha's

An account of this can be found in 2 Kings 13:20-21. Elisha had died. Some time later, some men were burying a dead man, when a band of Moabites invaded the country. Fearing for their own lives, they hurriedly tossed the dead man into Elisha's tomb, and ran away. As soon as the dead man came into contact with Elisha's bones, he "revived, and stood up on his feet."

10. While Jesus was wandering the desert, Satan tried to tempt Jesus into turning some objects into BREAD to feed himself. What were these objects?

From Quiz Bread in the Bible

Answer: Stones

A detailed account of the temptations of Jesus while He was wandering in the desert can be found in Matthew 4:1-13. After being baptised, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, where he fasted for forty days and forty nights. Satan came to Him, and told Him that if He really was the Son of God, He should command the stones to be turned into bread, to which Jesus replied "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Satan then took Him into the Holy City to the pinnacle of the temple, and said that if He really was the Son of God, he should cast Himself down to see if the angels would save Him, to which Jesus replied "It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." The third and final temptation that Satan tried to entice Jesus with was a trip up a very high mountain. He showed Him the glory of all the kingdoms of the world, saying to Jesus that he would give them all to Him if Jesus would fall down and worship him, to which Jesus replied "Get thee hence, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." After the third temptation failed, Satan left, and angels came to aid Jesus.

12. The first couple in the Bible. He was made from the dust of the ground; she was made from his rib. They ate from a forbidden tree and were driven out of a beautiful garden.

From Quiz Husbands and Wives in the Bible

Answer: Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve are in the first few chapters of Genesis. Adam was created from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7) and Eve was created from Adam's rib (Genesis 2:21-22). In Genesis 3 they ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil and were driven out of the garden of Eden.

13. Who, with the help of his followers, made the first complete translation of the New Testament into English?

From Quiz English Bible Translations

Answer: Wycliffe

Although parts of the Bible had been translated earlier, the first complete English translation was made by John Wycliffe and his followers. Their work was based on the Latin Vulgate, which had been translated from the Septuagint, the Hebrew, and older Latin texts by St. Jerome. All of Wycliffe's works were condemned at the Council of Constance in 1415.

14. What is the first book of the Bible?

From Quiz King James Bible: Do You Know The Order?

15. The Christian Bible, as we know it today, was originally written in three different languages. Can you name the three languages?

From Quiz Fascinating Trivia About the Bible

Answer: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek

The Christian Bible as we know it today was written in three languages -- Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The vast majority of the content in the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, the language the original readers spoke. However, some parts of the Old Testament were written in Aramaic with Ezra and Daniel being two examples. Meanwhile, the New Testament was written in Greek, the common language of the day. 16. Oh! This is a horrible dream. I've been taken from my husband to a Pharaoh's house. The Pharaoh wants to have me for himself, but plagues are falling on his house because of me. Who have I become in this dream?

From Quiz Wildest Dreams

Answer: Sarai

According to Genesis 12:10-20, Abram went to Egypt to live because there was a great famine in the land. He told Sarai that because she was beautiful the Egyptians would want to kill him and take her if they knew she was his wife. He told her to say that she was his sister so that he would not be killed. When the prices of Pharaoh saw her they took her to Pharaoh's house and Pharaoh entreated Abram well for her. When God sent plagues on Pharaoh's house, he sent for Abram and asked him why he had not said Sarai was his wife. Pharaoh then sent Abram and Sarai away with all they had.

17. Andrew and his brother were fishermen. When Andrew first met Jesus, he went and got his brother to come meet him too. What was Andrew's brother's name?

From Quiz Bible Career Choices

Answer: Simon Peter

Simon Peter and his brother, Andrew, were both uneducated men who simply fished for a living. By the time that Jesus was through with them, their education, while not of a formal nature, was at least formidable! In Mark 1:16-17 Jesus came into the region of Galilee and encountered some of his first disciples. "Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men." The brothers James and John, also uneducated men, made their mark on folks, too. In the 3rd chapter of Acts, we see where a lame man was healed by Peter and John, and the religious and civil counsel took them into custody for questioning. In the 13th and 14th verses of chapter 4, we read: "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it."

18. Finally. I finished The Bible _______ [NIV]

From Quiz Hash-tagging the Bible

Answer: #amen

Amen was the last word in The Bible. (Revelation 22:21) We used amen to end prayers and to express strong agreements.

19. The letter 'B'. What was the name of the blind beggar who miraculously regained his sight after encountering Jesus at Jericho? (Mark 10:46)

From Quiz 25 Miracles in the Bible -- 'A' Through to 'Z'

Answer: Bartimaeus

Bartimaeus was a helpless blind beggar who miraculously regained his sight after he had an encounter with Jesus. His story appears in the 10th chapter of the Gospel of Mark. It's a heartwarming story and has always been one of my favorites. In fact, the first quiz I did for FunTrivia was about blind Bartimaeus. According to Scripture, Bartimaeus was the son of Timaeus but no other details are given about his family.

20. The Book of Judges tells us that Samson overcame a lion with brawn and bare hands, but what kind of creatures did he cunningly use to destroy the Philistines' crops by attaching firebrands to their tails?

From Quiz Biblical Beasts, Birds and Bugs

Answer: Foxes

In Judges 15:4-5, we read that Samson caught three hundred foxes, then "turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails". He then set the brands on fire and let the foxes run into the cornfields and vineyards of the Philistines, destroying them. The Hebrew word for fox also means "burrower", while the Greek word for fox ("alopex"), as used in the New Testament, also means "a sly or crafty man". In Ezekiel (13:4), the false prophets of Israel are likened to foxes. The species of fox which inhabited Biblical lands was the Syrian fox.

21. The letter 'B'. What was the name of David's wife who worked behind the scenes to make sure her son Solomon would become king?

From Quiz 25 Women of the Bible -- 'A' through to 'Z'

Answer: Bathsheba

Bathsheba, of course, is the correct answer. She is perhaps best remembered for having an adulterous affair with David while her husband Urriah, a soldier, was off in battle. In addition to being beautiful, it's apparent Bathsheba knew how to be a powerbroker. It was largely because of her intervention that Solomon became king, beating out his half brother Adonijah, the son of Haggith. Batsheva's intervention, with the help of Nathan the prophet, is told in the first chapter of 1 Kings. With Solomon as king, Bathsheba would become the most powerful woman in the land.

22. In Deuteronomy, chapter 34, we can read how Moses went up from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah where the Lord showed him all the lands spread out beneath him - the lands which he had promised to Moses' forefathers. What did Moses do then?

From Quiz Some Biblical Events

Answer: he died

We can read, in the same chapter, that Moses died there in the land of Moab at the grand, old age of 120 years, without ever setting foot in the promised land. He was buried there and it is written, '--- no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day'.

23. Which book would you find between Jeremiah and Ezekiel in the Protestant Bible?

From Quiz Navigating the Bible

Answer: Lamentations

Lamentations is also by Jeremiah, a prophet so renowned for the misery of his messages that his name has been given to a litany of woes: a 'jeremiad'! Isaiah is the first of the major prophets, and comes before Jeremiah. Daniel comes after Ezekiel, not before it. Habakkuk was one of the minor prophets, and is nowhere near Jeremiah or Ezekiel.

The story of Jesus bringing Jairus' daughter back to life can be found in Luke 8:47-56. Jairus and his wife sought Jesus' help after their daughter had died. Jesus went to their house, only allowing Peter, James, John, and the girl's parents in with him. Jesus merely held her hand, and said "Maid, arise!" and she did. He then instructed her parents to give her something to eat, and also to not breathe a word about the resurrection to anyone.

29. During Passover, Israelites were (and still are) required to eat unleavened BREAD. What does the eating of unleavened BREAD symbolise, according to the Bible?

From Quiz Bread in the Bible

Answer: It's to symbolise the haste with which the Israelites had to leave Egypt.

The origin of eating unleavened bread comes from Exodus, during the time of Moses. After the slaying of the Firstborn, the Israelites had to leave Egypt quickly. They had to take food with them, but they didn't have enough time to bake any bread with yeast, which would help it rise. "And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not tarry, neither had they prepared themselves for any victuals." Exodus 12:39. Today, Passover remembers the freedom of the Israelites, after having been enslaved in Ancient Egypt.
