Cowrofl's Leftovers Trivia Questions

1. What Biblical name do you get when you use the symbols for phosphorus, hydrogen, iodine, lithium and phosphorus? (Spelling of name is per the NKJV.)

From Quiz
A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #20

Answer: Philip

Philip, one of the original Twelve Disciples, is the correct answer. According to John 12:21, Philip came from Bethsaida, the same town as Peter and Andrew. Bethsaida was a fishing community on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. There is a second man in the New Testament called Philip. He was a Grecian Jew who was chosen to oversee the distribution of food to widows, as per Acts 6:1-7. Acts 8:26-40 tells of Philip converting an unnamed Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity. For the record, here are the symbols for the elements in the question: phosphorus (P), hydrogen (H), iodine (I), lithium (Li) and phosphorus (P). (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Chemical Symbols, Bible Edition -- Men'.)

2. The following quote, containing the word 'bad', is from Matthew 7:18 in the NKJV: "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit." Who made this statement?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #18

Answer: Jesus

The statement from Matthew 7:18 was made by Jesus. The verse is part of a passage in which Jesus warns the people to beware of false prophets, adding in the NKJV "you will know them by their fruits". The passage is part of Christ's famous Sermon on the Mount. (The question is left over from a quiz about the word 'bad' in the Old and New Testaments.)

3. A woman with a name that starts and ends with the same letter prophesied in the days of King Josiah that Jerusalem was about to fall because of the wickedness of the people. According to 2 Kings 22:14, what was the woman's name?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #17

Answer: Huldah

Huldah was a prophetess in the Old Testament who gave advice to the high priest Hilkiah, yet another name that starts and ends with the same letter. In a nutshell, Huldah told Hilkiah and his associates God would "bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants" because the people of Jerusalem had turned their backs to Him. However, because King Josiah had humbled himself, Huldah prophesied God's judgment on Jerusalem would not come until the king had died peacefully. (The question is left over from a quiz about Bible names starting and ending with the same letter.)

4. The following verse, containing the word 'rest', is from Psalm 55:6 in the NKJV: "So I said, 'Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.'" Who is credited with writing Psalm 55?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #16

Answer: David

David is the author of Psalm 55 as well as more than seventy other Psalms found in the book. The verse is part of a passage in which David pours his heart out to God during a severe trial he was enduring. Many people believe the Psalm is telling prophetically of the experience of Jesus Christ. To put the verse in context, here's how Psalm 55:4-7 appears in the NKJV: "My heart is severely pained within me and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me and horror has overwhelmed me. So I said, 'Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. Indeed, I would wander far off and remain in the wilderness.'" (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Taking a 'Rest' in the Old and New Testaments'.)

5. Using the NKJV, Joseph's father-in-law had a hyphenated name, as per Genesis 41:45. Can you name his father-in-law?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #15

Answer: Poti-Pherah

Poti-Pherah was Joseph's father-in-law. Genesis 41:45 states the Pharaoh gave Joseph a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. (In the KJV and the NIV, Poti-Phera's name is not hyphenated.) The same verse also states the Pharaoh gave Joseph a new hyphenated name: Zaphnath-Paaneah. Joseph and Asenath were the parents of two boys, Manasseh and Ephraim. (The question is left over from a quiz about hyphenated names in the Bible.)

6. Judges 16:2 in the NKJV tells of people being "quiet all night" as they surrounded the house of a harlot in Gaza in a bid to kill a judge of Israel in the morning. What is the name of the judge they were determined to kill?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Leftovers -- #14

Answer: Samson

Samson is the correct answer. According to Judges 16 in the NKJV, Samson entered the house of a prostitute in Gaza and when the locals found out, they set a trap to kill him in the morning. Verse 2 states "they surrounded the place" and they "were quiet all night", saying, "In the morning, when it is daylight, we will kill him." However, Samson, the super strong judge of Israel, thwarted their plans when he made a break for it during the night. According to Verse 3, Samson arose at midnight, "took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two gateposts, pulled them up, bar and all, put them on his shoulders, and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron." No further details are given. (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Will You Please Be Quiet!')

7. According to Joshua 12:13, the Israelites defeated a king who reigned over an area spelled entirely on the left side of your keyboard. What was the name of the area the king reigned over?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Leftovers -- #13

Answer: Geder

The correct answer is Geder. Joshua 12:7-24 tells of the Israelites conquering a number of towns and districts in Canaan ruled by kings with one of them being Geder. The passage also makes mention of the Israelites conquering another municipality spelled entirely ion the left side of your keyboard and that placename is Gezer. No names are given for the kings of Geder or Gezer. The Isrealit3es moved in and conquered Canaan, known as the Promised Land, under the leadership of Joshua. (The question is left over from a quiz about 'Bible Names on the Left Side of Your Keyboard'.)

8. According to Exodus 28:14, who was the first high priest of the Israelites who wore an ephod which featured gold chains?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #12

Answer: Aaron

Aaron, the brother of Moses and Miriam, was the first high priest of the Israelites. Exodus 28 tells of Moses receiving explicit instructions from God about the priestly garment Aaron was to wear. As part of the instructions, the ephod worn by Aaron featured "two chains of pure gold like braided cords." (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Ropes and Chains in the Bible.')

9. Scripture tells of Samson visiting a prostitute who lived in a community with a placename spelled entirely on the left side of your keyboard. What was the name of the city, as per Judges 16:1?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #11

Answer: Gaza

According to Judges 16:1, Samson, a judge of Israel known for his super strength, went to Gaza and visited an unnamed prostitute. When local residents caught wind of his visit, they planned to surround the house and kill him in the morning when he came out. However, Samson surprised them by leaving the prostitute's house at midnight. Scripture states Samson took hold of the doors of the gate of the city as well as the two gateposts and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron. According to the Smith's Bible Dictionary, Gaza was one of the five chief cities of the Philistines in Biblical times. (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Bible Names From the Left Side of Your Keyboard'.)

10. Who asked Jesus this question? "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #10

Answer: The original Twelve Disciples

The question, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?", was asked of Jesus by the original Twelve Disciples, as per Matthew 18:1-5. The passage tells of the disciples getting an answer they were not expecting. Scripture tells of Jesus calling a little child to come to Him and after setting the child in the midst of them, He made the famous proclamation: "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me." The teaching was seen as extremely radical at the time, as children in Biblical times were to be seen and not heard. (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Ten Questions People Asked Jesus'.)

11. Who asked Jesus this question? "Rabbi, where are You staying?"

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #9

Answer: Andrew and another unnamed disciple of John the Baptist

The question of Jesus was asked by Andrew and another unnamed disciple of John the Baptist, as per John 1:35-39. Verse 35 explains John the Baptist was standing with two of his disciples when he saw Jesus coming and proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God!" Scripture goes on to tell of the two disciples following Jesus and when He saw this, Jesus turned and asked them, "What do you seek?" In response, the two disciples of John asked Jesus where He was staying. When Jesus told them to, "come and see," they went where He was staying and remained with Him the rest of the day. Then Verse 40 explains one of two who followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. (The question is left over from a quiz about questions people asked Jesus.)

12. Who asked Jesus this question? "Lord, are You washing my feet?"

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #8

Answer: Peter

Peter asked the question of Jesus at the Last Supper, as per John 13:6. When Jesus answered Peter, saying, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this," Peter was defiant. "You shall never wash my feet!" he is quoted as saying in Verse 8. When Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me," Peter again spoke without thinking things through. In Verse 9, he is quoted as telling Jesus, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" Verse 10 tells of Christ's response: "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." (The statement 'not all of you' was in reference to Judas Iscariot who would betray Him.) After washing their feet, Jesus goes on to tell His disciples: "Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." (The question is left over from a quiz about questions people asked Jesus.)

13. Who asked God this question? "LORD, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #7

Answer: Moses

The correct answer is Moses as per Exodus 5:22. According to Scripture, Moses asked the question shortly after he made his fist appearance before the Pharaoh seeking permission for the Israelites to leave Egypt and go to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. The Pharaoh firmly shot down Moses' request and took decisive action to make life tougher for the Israelites who were slaves for the Egyptians. As part of their duties to make bricks, the Pharaoh decreed the Israelites would have to gather straw for themselves and they would have to reach the same production quota. Previously, the straw had been provided to them. The Israelites took their anger out on Moses and Aaron, stating, "Let the LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us." Scripture tells of Moses turning to God and asking Him: "LORD why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all." Scripture goes on to tell of Moses and the Israelites, after a long process, gaining approval from the Pharaoh to leave Egypt. (The question is left over from a quiz about questions people asked God.)

14. According to Exodus 9:8-12 what skin condition afflicted the Egyptians during the sixth plague unleashed on the country?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #6

Answer: boils

The Egyptians became afflicted with boils after God instructed Moses and Aaron to take "handfuls of ashes from a furnace" and scatter it "toward the heavens in the sight of Pharaoh." According to Exodus 9:8-12, the ashes from the furnace became fine dust, causing "boils that break out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt." The plague was part of a divine plan to convince the Pharaoh to grant permission to the Israelites to leave Egypt and move to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. (The question is left over from a quiz about the miracles of Moses.)

15. According to Acts 20:7-12, what was the name of the young man who died after falling out of a third-storey window and then was miraculously brought back to life by Paul?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Leftovers -- #5

Answer: Eutychus

Eutychus was miraculously brought back to life when he died after tumbling out of a third-storey window in Troas, as per Acts 20:7-12. According to the passage, Eutychus fell asleep in a window as Paul apparently preached on and on. Scripture tells of Eutychus falling to his death and then being revived by Paul. No age is given for Eutychus, but it is commonly assumed he was a youth, possibly as young as 13 or 14 years. (The question is left over from a quiz about the miracles of Peter and Paul.)

16. Going strictly by Scripture, how many children did Zebedee have?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #4

Answer: 2

Going strictly by Scripture, Zebedee had two sons -- James and John. His sons were two of the original Twelve Disciples, as per Mark 1:19. Zebedee was a fisherman like his two sons. Many theologians believe Zebedee's wife was Salome. It is possible Zebedee and Salome were the parents of other children, but going by Scripture, the correct answer to the question has to be two. (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Children In the Old and New Testaments.)

17. What Old Testament book makes the statement that a child raised the right way will never depart from it?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #3

Answer: Proverbs

The advice about raising a child is found in Proverbs 22:6. The verse in the NKJV states, "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." A considerable portion of Proverbs, including Chapter 22, was written by King Solomon. (The question was left over from a quiz about children in the Old and New Testaments.)

18. According to 1 Samuel 1:1, Samuel was a descendant of a man whose name starts with the letter 'Z'. What was the man's name?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #2

Answer: Zuph

The correct answer is Zuph, who was Samuel's great-great-great-grandfather. Not much is known about Zuph, apart from the fact he was an Ephramite. 1 Samuel 1:1 in the NKJV gives an outline of Samuel's lineage: "Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph." Samuel was the last judge of Israel. After his rule, Saul became king. Samuel's parents were Elkanah and Hannah. (This question was originally written for my quiz titled '25 Bible Names Starting With the Letter Z', but ended up not being used.)

19. According to Numbers 22:4, the father of Balak, king of Moab, had a name that starts with the letter Z. What was the name of Balak's father?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs

Answer: Zippor

Zippor was the father of Balak, king of Moab, according to Numbers 22:4. However, not much is known about Zippor as he is mentioned in passing reference. Incidentally, Chapter 22 of Numbers goes on to tell of Balaam of Peor and the donkey that spoke to him. The account of Balaam and the talking donkey can be found in Numbers 22:22-40. (This question was originally written for my quiz titled '25 Bible Names Starting With the Letter Z', but ended up not being used.)

20. What Biblical name do you get when you use the symbols for ruthenium, fluorine, uranium and sulfur? (Spelling of name is per the NKJV.)

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #20

Answer: Rufus

Rufus was a son of Simon of Cyrene, as per Mark 15:21. Simon was the man who helped carry Christ's cross to Golgotha. The name Rufus also appears in Romans 16:13, but many theologians believe it is not the same man. Here are the symbols for the four elements in the question: ruthenium (Ru), fluorine (F), uranium (U) and sulfur (S). (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Chemical Symbols, Bible Edition -- Men'.)

21. The following verse, containing the word 'smoke', is from the NKJV: "He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke." In what book do you find such a verse?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #19

Answer: Psalms

The verse in question is Psalm 104:32. To put the verse in context, here's how it reads in the NKJ with Verse 31: "May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works. He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke." The subhead for Psalm 104 in the NKJV Study Bible is 'Praise to the Sovereign LORD for His Creation and Providence'. No on knows for certain who wrote Psalm 104. (The question is left over from a quiz about 'smoke' in the Bible.)

22. The son of Phinehas and the great grandson of Aaron had a name that starts and ends with the same letter, as per 1 Chronicles 6:4. Can you identify the man from the four names below?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #17

Answer: Abishua

Abishua was the son of Phinehas and a great grandson of Aaron, as per 1 Chronicles 6:4. Not much is known about Abishua as he is mentioned in passing reference. However, Verse 5 states he was the father of Bukki. There is a second man named Abishua in the Old Testament. According to 1 Chronicles 8:4, he was the son of Bela. (The question is left over from a quiz about Bible names starting and ending with the same letter.)

23. Old Testament Scripture from the NKJV quotes God as saying, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." In what book do you find this verse?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #15

Answer: Genesis

The verse is from Genesis 2:18, "And the LORD God said, 'It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.'" The verse is part of a passage telling of God creating the heavens and the earth. Genesis 2:21-22 states God induced Adam into a deep sleep and then took one of his ribs and created the first woman, Eve. (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Alone in the Old and New Testaments'.)

24. The following quote containing the word 'quiet', as per the NKJV, was made by a long-suffering man: "I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, for trouble comes." Who made the statement that he was not at ease and was not quiet?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Leftovers -- #14

Answer: Job

Job, of course, is the correct answer. He made the comment in Job 3:26. The verse is part of a lengthy passage in which Job deplores his birth. The comments were directed at three friends who attempted to comfort him after he suffered through a series of calamities. Job's three friends were Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar. A fourth friend, Elihu, would visit Job later. (The question is left over from a quiz titled 'Will You Please Be Quiet!')

25. According to Genesis 19:14, who warned his two sons-in-law to leave Sodom before the city's impending destruction but they thought he was simply joking?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Leftovers -- #13

Answer: Lot

Genesis 19:14 tells of Lot urging his two unnamed sons-in-law to flee Sodom to escape the pending destruction. The verse in the NKJV quotes Lot as stating: "Get up, get out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city!" However, the verse goes on to state Lot's sons-in-law thought he was joking and did not follow his advice. Scripture goes on to tell of Lot, his wife and their two daughters fleeing the destruction. However, Lot's wife looked back on the destruction, contrary to divine instructions, and ended up being turned into a pillar of salt. (The question is left over for a quiz titled 'No One, It Seemed, Believed Them'.)

26. According to Judges 8:22-27, what judge of Israel created an ephod made out of plundered gold taken from a variety of sources, including chains which had adorned the necks of camels of the Midianites?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #12

Answer: Gideon

Gideon is the correct answer. Judges 8 tells of Gideon leading three hundred Israelite soldiers to a resounding victory over a massive number of Midiante soldiers and then using some of the plunder to make a special gold ephod. Verses 25-26 tells of each man contributing a gold earring to go with the other booty that included "crescent ornaments, pendants, and purple robes which were on the kings of Midian" as well as "chains that were around their camels' necks." 27. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one, according to 1 Samuel 10:21, was an ancestor of King Saul?

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #10

Answer: Matri

Matri is mentioned as an ancestor of Saul in 1 Samuel 10:21. The verse is part of a passage telling of Saul, the son of Kish, being selected to become the first king of Israel. However, when the people went looking for Saul to make him king, he couldn't be found. 1 Samuel 10:22 tells of the people inquiring of the LORD about Saul's whereabouts with the LORD answering, "There he is, hidden among the equipment." (The English Standard Version states Saul was hiding among the "baggage".) Scripture goes on to tell of the people taking Saul from his hiding place and proclaiming him as Israel's first king. Using various translations of the Bible, 1 Samuel 10:21 is the only place in which Matri is mentioned. As a result, little is known about him. 28. Who asked Jesus this question? "See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?"

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #9

Answer: Peter

The question was asked of Jesus by Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples, as per Matthew 19:27. According to Scripture, Peter asked the question moments after Jesus made the famous statement, "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." In response to Peter's question, Jesus is quoted in Matthew 29:30 in the NKJV as saying "...Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life." (The question is left from a quiz about questions people asked Jesus.)

29. Who asked Jesus this question? "How did the fig tree wither away so soon?"

From Quiz A Serving of Biblical Left Overs -- #8

Answer: The original Twelve Disciples

Matthew 21:20 tells of the original Twelve Disciples asking the question of Jesus after they saw a fig tree wither before their eyes. Previous verses state Jesus was hungry and saw a fig tree by the road but found no fruit on it. Jesus is quoted as saying to the tree: "Let no fruit grow on you ever again." Immediately the fig tree withered away. When the disciples saw the incident, Scripture states they marveled, wanting to know, "How did the fig tree wither away so soon?" Verses 21 and 22 tell of Christ's response to the disciples: "Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." (The question is left over from a quiz about questions people asked Jesus.)
