Old Testament / Tanakh Trivia Questions

1. According to Old Testament Scripture, the waters of the Jordan River were parted when the water was struck by a cloak. Who parted the water?

From Quiz
The Miracles of Elijah and Elisha -- #3

Answer: Both Elijah and Elisha

Both Elijah and Elisha parted the water of the Jordan River when they struck it with a cloak. The two partings of the river took place in a short period of time. In other words, it was almost a case of back-to-back instances. 2 Kings 2:8 tells of Elijah parting the Jordan River when he struck it with his cloak. Shortly after this incident, Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind as Elisha, his understudy looked on. Verses 13-15 go on to tell of Elisha taking the same cloak and striking the Jordan River with the water miraculously parting once again. Going strictly by Scripture, this was the first miracle Elisha performed.

2. According to 1 Kings 17:12-16, who were the recipients of flour and oil produced miraculously by Elijah?

From Quiz The Miracles of Elijah and Elisha -- #2

Answer: A widow and her son

1 Kings 17:12-16 states an impoverished widow and her son in Zarephath miraculously received flour and oil after Elijah learned of their plight. Prior to Elijah's miracle, the situation was so dire for the widow and her son they were preparing to die, as per Verse 12. After following Elijah's instructions, the widow miraculously ended up with a constant supply of food as Verse 16 states a bin of flour and a jar of oil was constantly replenished for the woman and her son. No names are given for the woman and the boy.

3. The Tribe named after Jacob and Leah's eldest son settled on the northeast coast of the Dead Sea. Which Tribe was this?

From Quiz The Tribes of Israel

Answer: Reuben

Along with a couple of other Tribes, Reuben was granted the land east of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. As they had a lot of livestock, they settled in a region that included the plain of Madaba. Traditionally, their borders extended to the Arnon River to the south, and as far north as the Dead Sea extended. To the east, their border was ill-defined, as it extended into desert.

4. Imagine a clear night sky with no moon and no stars. How strange! According to Genesis chapter 1, on which day did God set the moon and stars in the heavens?

From Quiz Ye Old Testament Nights

Answer: The fourth day

The six days of creation are recounted in Genesis chapter 1. (God rested on the seventh). On the first day, God separated the light from the darkness, but He did not yet create the sun and the moon and the stars. Those only appeared in the sky on Day four "to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness". [Genesis 1:14-19] "Day of Awakening" is not a phrase found in the NIV. Nor does Genesis 1 specify that Day four was a Sunday.

5. The 176 verses of Psalm 119 are divided into 22 stanzas, each named for a Hebrew letter. What is the name of the first stanza, associated with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet?

From Quiz Something Old Again

Answer: Aleph

The names of the stanzas go all the way from aleph to tau (the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet). The stanza named for aleph describes the glories of obeying the Commandments: "Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord ..." (Psalm 119:1).

6. The people of the world once set out to build a tower that would touch Heaven. Because of this, God separated the human languages and scattered the human race. What was the name of the tower?

From Quiz Something Old

Answer: Babel

At that time - as described in Genesis 11 - "the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech" (11:1). When the people of earth, working together, decided to build the Tower of Babel, God saw that "now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do" (11:6). He therefore made the people speak different languages, so that they could no longer understand each other, and scattered them "upon the face of all the earth" (11:8) - ending the unity of the human race.

7. At 75 years of age Abram took a chance and left his country and kindred for a land God promised to show him. Which land did he depart from?

From Quiz A Biblical Game of Chance

Answer: Haran

According to Genesis 12, Abram believed God when he told him that he would make of him a great nation and His blessing would be upon him. Verse 4 tells us that at the age of 75 he departed out of Haran. He took his wife, Sarai, his brother-in-law, Lot, all their substance and the souls that they had obtained in Haran and left to go into Canaan. Quite risky!

8. When Moses had seen that the Israelites had made and worshipped a golden calf, what did he do?

From Quiz BT: Old Testament

Answer: he broke the tablets containing the Ten Commandments

Exodus 32:19. Moses also told them to separate those who will follow the Lord away from those who followed the calf. For those of you wondering what happened to the calf, it was burned, and three thousand men who didn't follow the Lord were killed that day.

9. Talk about struggling to get good help these days -- it was murder in the Old Testament. King Joash was assassinated by whom as a supposed act of revenge for the death of his own uncle Zechariah?

From Quiz Fidelity...Not!

Answer: His servants

Joash (or Jehoash) of Judah was bought to the people and anointed King by his great uncle, the High Priest, Jehoiada, when he was seven years of age. Joash stayed true to God while Jehoiada remained alive but on his passing he was swayed into the worship of other gods and idols. The new High Priest Zechariah, who was the son of Jehoiada, condemned the King for his actions. Joash had, by this time, forgotten about the loyalty that had been shown to him by Zechariah's father and ordered that he (Zechariah) be stoned to death. This incurred the wrath of God and he showed his hand by allowing the smaller Syrian army to defeat Joash's much larger force. The course of the battle saw Joash wounded severely and as he lay in his bed recovering he was killed by two of his servants, Zabad and Jehozabad. The killing is recorded as revenge for the blood of Zechariah. Whilst Joash was laid to rest in the City of David, poignantly it was not within the royal tombs. (See 2 Kings 12.)

10. After the events of the creation of the world as described in Genesis 1, what was the first recorded supernatural event sent from God?

From Quiz Set Fire to the Rain

Answer: The great flood

The account of the great flood begins with God's warnings to Noah in Genesis 6, with the rains falling in chapter 7, flooding the earth because of the wickedness in the world. Genesis 7:17-23 describes it: "For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits. Every living thing that moved on land perished-birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark."

11. What is the first book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament of the English Bible?

From Quiz Order! Order! Can I Have Some Order! -- #2

Answer: Genesis

Genesis is the correct answer. In a nutshell, Genesis is a book about the creation of the world followed by the initial rise of the Israelite nation through the blood line of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state it is believed Moses wrote Genesis in the wilderness of Sinai. In fact, Moses is traditionally credited with writing the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible.

12. In which valley does the prophet Hosea indicate where God says He will "break the bow of Israel"?

From Quiz Biblical Geographic Ups and Downs

13. The letter 'A'. What was the name of the Canaanite city where Joshua experienced defeat followed by victory? (Joshua 7 and 8)

From Quiz 25 Old Testament Place Names -- 'A' to 'Z'

Answer: Ai

Ai is the correct answer. It was a city in the land of Canaan and it was here that Joshua and the Israelites tasted bitter defeat (Joshua 7:4-5) and spectacular victory (Joshua 8:26). According to Scripture, Ai was near Jericho and on the east side of Bethel. Beside Ai was Beth Aven.

14. Where were the Israelites when they had their last encounter with Pharaoh?

From Quiz Oh No! I Think We're Lost!

Answer: Red Sea

After ten plagues sent by God, Pharoah finally consented to let the Israelites into the desert. A while later Pharoah changed his mind and decided to go get the Israelites and make them his slaves again. He set out for them with over 600 chariots. When they came upon the Israelites near the Red Sea, God told Moses to stretch his staff over the Red Sea. When Moses did, the Red Sea split in two and the Israelites crossed on dry land. When they had crossed they saw the Egyptians following them so God told Moses to stretch his staff back over the Red Sea. When he did the Red Sea came back together swallowing up the Egyptians (all but Pharoah) in the process. This can be found in Exodus 14.

15. The letter 'A'. Let's start things off with an easy one. Who was the first man?

From Quiz 25 Men of the Old Testament -- From 'A' to 'Z'

Answer: Adam

Adam, of course, was the first man. The creation of mankind is told in Genesis 1:26. According to Genesis 2:7, God formed the first man "from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." The name Adam first appears in Genesis 2:20.

16. What's the common link between Bilhah and Zilpah?

From Quiz A Common Link -- Old Testament Characters -- #2

Answer: Servants of Rachel and Leah who bore children for Jacob.

The two women were servants of Rachel and Leah who bore children for Jacob. According to Scripture, Bilhah was a handmaiden for Rachel and gave birth to Dan and Naphtali. Meanwhile, Zilpah was a handmaiden for Leah and gave birth to Gad and Asher. Genesis 30 tells of the births of their first children.

17. What's the common link between Cain and Moses?

From Quiz A Common Link -- Old Testament Characters

Answer: Both were murderers.

Both Cain and Moses were murderers. Cain, of course, killed his brother Abel, making him the world's first murderer (Genesis 4:8). Meanwhile, Moses was guilty of killing an Egyptian and burying his body in the sand (Exodus 2:11-15). Scripture states after Moses killed the Egyptian the Pharaoh became aware of the crime and attempted to have him killed. Moses, however, fled to Midian.

18. According to Genesis 13:2 in the NIV Bible, what did Abram have with him when he went up from Egypt to Bethel and then to Ai in Canaan?

From Quiz Biblical Baggage

Answer: Livestock, silver and gold

At this point Abram is described as "very rich", and he went with all his possessions; certainly he was neither empty-handed, nor did he have only his tent and his wife, as we see that on arrival there was not enough grazing for both his livestock and the "flocks and herds and tents" which his nephew Lot also brought along.

19. As he slept on his boat, Jonah's ship was going the opposite direction from where God wanted it to go. Eventually, Jonah was swallowed by a big fish and spit out where he needed to go. Which city, who turned from their evil ways, was saved by God?

From Quiz Long Road to Ruin

Answer: Nineveh

God commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh to save the people from destruction, but Jonah rebelled, and went the other direction, toward Tarshish. However, Jonah was eventually forced to travel to Nineveh. According to Jonah 3:10, the Ninevites repented and were saved, and not destroyed. However, though they repented and were saved this time, the Ninevites again went back to their evil ways, and would thus be destroyed later. The destruction of the city was foretold in Zephaniah 2:13-15. This prophesy was fulfilled when Nabopolassar and Cyaxares besieged and captured Nineveh. The Medes and Persians destroyed Nineveh, making it "a ruin heap". To this day, Nineveh is a desolate waste. The city was built by Nimrod, who also built the city of Nimrud.
