Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You shall have no other gods before Me"

Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, according to Scripture. The First Commandment states people are not to have any other gods than God who created heaven and earth.

Mount Sinai is also known as Mount Horeb.

Moses received the commandments while the Israelites were in the early part of a 40-year-long journey, travelling from Egypt to Canaan, the Promised Land.
2. "You shall not make for yourself a carved image to bow down before"

The Second Commandment appears in Exodus 20:4-6. The complete wording of the commandment, as per the NKJV, reads this way: "You shall not make for yourself a carved image -- any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments."
3. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain"

The complete wording of the Third Commandment, as per Exodus 20:7 in the NKJV, reads this way: "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain."

According to Scripture, God revealed the Ten Commandments to Moses on top of Mount Sinai during a severe thunderstorm and lightning.

Exodus 19:8 states, Mount Sinai was "completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire" and the entire mountain "quaked greatly."
4. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy"

The Fourth Commandment, in its entirety, reads this way in the NKJV: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."

The Ten Commandments were inscribed on on two tablets.
5. "Honor your father and your mother"

The Fifth Commandment states for those who honor their father and mother, "your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you."

It's not uncommon to see the Ten Commandments duplicated in a variety of ways in today's world. For example, there are Websites telling of the Ten Commandments of Leadership or the Ten Commandments of a Responsible Pet Owner.
6. "You shall not murder"

Even for people who have never opened a Bible, many of the Ten Commandments are something they have undoubtedly heard many times. "You shall not murder" (or "You shall not kill") is a classic example of this.

The Ten Commandments are seen as being so vitally important Moses repeated them in Deuteronomy 5:6-21.
7. "You shall not commit adultery"

The Ten Commandments were inscribed on two tablets by the finger of God, as per Exodus 31:18. The tablets were then given to Moses to present to the Israelites who were camped near the base of Mount Sinai.
8. "You shall not steal"

When Moses descended from Mount Sinai, to his horror he saw the Israelites worshipping a gold calf. Adding insult to injury, the gold calf was made by Aaron, the older brother of Moses.

In other words, the Second Commandment had already been broken.

In total anger, Moses smashed the two tablets by throwing them on the ground.
9. "You shall not bear false witness"

After the two tablets containing the Ten Commandments were smashed, Moses went back up Mount Sinai and returned with two more tablets for the people.
10. "You shall not covet"

The tenth and final commandment reads this way in the NKJV in its entirety: "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."

The Ten Commandments form the backbone for laws in most countries around the world.
