Subject: Cryptic Crosswords

Posted by: jolana

Hi,
My son-in-law was impressed by my addiction to FT and my "success", in his view:)- (I consider myself average, by the way), anyway, he gave me a copy of New Cryptic Crosswords by Daily Mail for Christmas because he thought that would be something for me. The other way around - I am lost. It´s too difficult for me. Nevertheless, why not to share some. (I know the answers as they are at the back of the book:))

1)It´s not true one can bear it. (5,7)
2)Taken on top form when in dead trouble. (7)
3)Censure salesman at a high level. (7)
4)Undertaking to go in for minimal cash increase. (10)

(That´s just a demo - others will follow if someone finds it funny.)

Just seen your thread jolana ... Cryptic crosswords are popular in the UK with daily puzzles in most of the daily newspapers. They are great fun and (in my view) far more rewarding to complete than GK crosswords.

Moonraker, thanks for the info, I thought it is something rare, now I see it is quite common.

Do you want more? I have the book and as it is far beyond my abilities, the only thing I can do with it is to share:)

This time I want the explanation!

5) One has to be distinguished from another of the characters(4).
6) You lose nothing to allow what´s thought mostly to be a festive season (8).
7) Secret code starting to become obvious (6).
8) Disposed of without starting to be seen as dated (3).

(I hope I didn´t make a mistake.)

6. Yuletide

You lose nothing - another word for nothing is zero, a zero looks like the letter o, so you lose the o in you = YU

To allow = LET

What's thought = idea, but mostly means you don't use the whole word = IDE

Final clue festive season, join all the parts together = YULETIDE

I know that English is not your first language Jolana so i'm not surprised you're having troubles with your crossword book. They are very tricky so I hope my explanation helps.

You might like to play this quiz Jolana, it is very good at explaining all the tricks used when writing and solving cryptic clues.
