Subject: Favourite Christmas Song

Every year in the build-up to Christmas, we hear songs that we hear too many times on the radio, but there's always at least one you love to hear. What is your favourite song to hear at Christmas time?

I am happy to hear pretty well any of the traditional carols, but the one I really, really HATE is "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas"...it makes me want to throw things at the sound system, TV or whatever !

And when I've been shopping (almost my least favourite occupation - only going to the dentist rates lower), I rather like "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer ".

This is one of several favorites of mine. It's worth watching musically, and for the faces of the congregation and the choir:

"O Holy Night" from the older songs, I also like the song John and Yoko wrote, "Happy Christmas (War is Over)".

I agree with schuhmacher. Here's Mannheim Steamroller's version of one of my favorite Catalan carols, "Fum fum fum":

"Oh Holy Night" is my most favorite. I love hearing Perry Como sing "Ave Maria" and the Boston Pops version of "Sleigh Ride" (which isn't really a Christmas song but we never hear it in February).

Another vote for "Oh Holy Night" in the traditional category. I also really love one that you don't hear too often, called something like "If I Had the Voice of an Angel" - Aaron Neville does a fabulous job of this one. I've recently been introduced to Tim Minchin's "White Wine in the Sun" which might just be my new favourite.

Nothing's more beautiful than "O Holy Night," I think. Here's a nice version of it, in Joan Baez's pretty-decent French (turns out she lived in France for a while):

I like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", especially by Loreena McKennitt.

And a Czech Renaissence one:

In my humble translation:

Wanting Jesus to sleep, Mary sang to him...

The Czech song is precious, in the best sense of the word. Děkuji, Jolana.

I am not, of course. And "není zač" (not at all), Lochalsh.

Here is an English version:

btw, the lyrics is not very nice. She sings to him about thorns, cross, nails etc.

I don´t understand much the English version, as it is too late and I don´t have the energy to listen carefully, but people criticized the translation as not very accurate.

Any selection from the Nativity portion of Handel's 'Messiah'. Another vote for 'O Holy Night', and any of the traditional carols (one of my favourites is the French carol 'Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella').

I'm not a fan of the cute or funny Christmas songs, like 'Grandma Hot Run Over by a Reindeer' (must be the orthodox Anglican in me that regards the season as sacred not cute) and if I never hear 'The Little Drummer Boy' again it will be too soon. Same goes for Elvis' 'Blue Christmas'. Yuk!

Of the secular Christmas songs, I like 'Silver Bells', 'The Christmas Song' (aka 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...') and 'I'll Be Home for Christmas' (especially pougnant when we are at war).
